UKOUG Tech15 – Day 3 – I think I heard “WebLogic”!

The UKOUG is now over so enjoy this blog because it will be the last one on this subject – at least this year! As said in a previous blog, I focused the agenda of my first day on integration solutions and news on this topic while I tried to follow APEX sessions yesterday.

Today, I was able to hear the word “WebLogic” (finally!) so today is therefore a good day ;). I divided my last day in two different parts: Oracle Identity and Access Management in the morning and Oracle Fusion Middleware in the afternoon.

Sessions of the day

The first session I attended today was an overview of all products provided by Oracle regarding the Identity and Access Management, presented by Atul Kumar (K21 Technologies) and one of his colleague. I didn’t know that Oracle already released so much products/solutions… They presented quite quickly the main purpose of the followings Oracle products: OAM, OIM, OID, OVD, OUD, OAAM, OIF, eSSO, OMSS, OES, OIA, OPAM, OAG, OWSM, aso… I already worked with some of these tools but that’s always good to get a reminder/update.

After this morning filled with Identity and Access Management subjects, I attended the first presentation about WebLogic that has been presented by Mike Lehmann (Oracle). This session talked about the WebLogic Server Strategy & RoadMap in the near future, which include new versions, new features as well as the cloud services, aso…

This session consisted of the following subjects:

• Multitenancy: a new concept in WLS that bring a possibility of consolidation of WebLogic Domains.
  • It introduce a new concept of (virtual) partition, a kind of container that contains everything that a domain does but a domain can contains several partitions.
  • According to Oracle, this new feature can reduce the number of domains from 3 to 10 times which also lead to a reduction of resources necessary and we can even manage the resources allocated to a specific partition to ensure that it will always have a certain priority.
  • A partition is an isolation but the WebLogic infrastructure is still shared between partitions.
    The Multitenancy concepts are not yet implemented in the complete Fusion Middleware level, that’s only a WebLogic Server concept but this will change soon.
  • With this concept of partition, it is now possible to move an application between WebLogic Domains without having to redeploy it, without having to reconfigure the JMS, aso…
• WebLogic Continuous Availability: some improvements in WLS to enable your applications to run 99,999% of the time
  • 0 downtime patching at the WebLogic Server level and also at the Java Virtual Machine level like an upgrade of the JRE.
  • Live migration using the partitions.
  • Cross Domain XA Recovery to recover transactions when a domain crash and continue the operation without any interruption on another domain in another datacenter.
  • Management of the automatic failover between datacenters directly in the Enterprise Manager.
• Other
  • Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse to develop and deploy application much more faster on WLS.
  • Built-in Maven plugin.
  • Automated Elasticity for Dynamic Cluster: scale up/down the size of your cluster based on predefined rules.
  • Certification for Docker: docker images are available for download!

And a lot of other interesting things coming soon.

After this session, I attended two other presentations about the upgrade of the Fusion Middleware stack and the different possible High Availability setup but these sessions were a little bit too high level (not technical enough) for me to really find them very interesting. I presume that these sessions were for beginners which is, I would say, also something normal in this kind of event.
