{"id":8841,"date":"2016-10-11T15:22:54","date_gmt":"2016-10-11T13:22:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/oswatcher-blackbox\/"},"modified":"2016-10-11T15:22:54","modified_gmt":"2016-10-11T13:22:54","slug":"oswatcher-blackbox","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/oswatcher-blackbox\/","title":{"rendered":"OTN Appreciation Day : OSWatcher Black Box (OSWBB)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this post, I will present a usefull and easy-to-use Oracle tool : OSWatcher.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Image1.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-10735 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Image1.gif\" alt=\"Image1\" width=\"241\" height=\"101\" \/><\/a>What is it ?<\/h3>\n<p>OSWatcher Black Box (OSWBB), for its full name, is a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">free<\/span> Oracle Tool which will help you to diagnose performance issues on the OS side.<br \/>\nOf course, it will not solve the issue for you, but it gives a system health state at a given moment.<br \/>\nOSWBB is multi-platforms supported (AIX, Solaris, HP-UX, Linux and Windows) and is installed by default on Oracle Database Appliance (ODA).<\/p>\n<h3>How does it work ?<\/h3>\n<p>OSWatcher invoke OS utilities like <em>vmstat<\/em>, <em>netstat<\/em>, <em>iostat<\/em>, etc. by creating a &#8220;Data Collectors&#8221; for each of them\u00a0available on the system. The &#8220;Data Collectors&#8221; works as background processes to collect periodically the data provided by these different OS utilities.<br \/>\nOnce collected, all the statistics are stored inside a common destination (archive directory).<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Image2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-10740\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Image2.png\" alt=\"Image2\" width=\"342\" height=\"155\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Below is the content of the archive directory. Doc ID 301137.1<\/a>\u00a0(.tar file &#8211; 6Mb)<\/p>\n<h3>Installing<\/h3>\n<p>To install OSWatcher, you simply have to untar the downloaded file :<br \/>\n<code>$ tar -xvf oswbb733.tar<\/code><br \/>\nAll necessary files are stored in the <i>oswbb<\/i> folder.<\/p>\n<h3>Uninstalling<\/h3>\n<p>To remove OSWatcher from your server, you only have to :<br \/>\n&#8211; Stop all OSWatcher running processes<br \/>\n&#8211; Delete the <em>oswbb<\/em> folder<\/p>\n<h3>Starting<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><code>$ nohup .\/OSWatcher.sh P1 P2 P3 P4<\/code><\/p>\n<h4>Parameters<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; P1 = snapshot interval in seconds (default : 30 seconds)<br \/>\n&#8211; P2 = number of hours of archive data to store (default : 48 hours)<br \/>\n&#8211; P3 = name of a compress utility to compress each file automatically (default : none)<br \/>\n&#8211;
