{"id":8029,"date":"2016-05-20T08:45:21","date_gmt":"2016-05-20T06:45:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/sql-server-2005-decommissioning-failed\/"},"modified":"2016-05-20T08:45:21","modified_gmt":"2016-05-20T06:45:21","slug":"sql-server-2005-decommissioning-failed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/sql-server-2005-decommissioning-failed\/","title":{"rendered":"SQL Server 2005 decommissioning failed!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The support for <a title=\"SQL Server 2005 no more supported\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/server-cloud\/products\/sql-server-2005\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SQL Server 2005 is no more available<\/a>, so we are migrating all the latest databases running under SQL Server 2005 to SQL server 2012 or higher!<br \/>\nLast time, I had to uninstall an old SQL Server 2005 clustered instance in a 64 bits architecture on Windows Server 2008R2.<br \/>\nIn fact, this clustered environment contains many other instances (either SQL Server 2005 or 2008 R2).<\/p>\n<p>But during the uninstallation, an error happened\u2026.<br \/>\nFirst, the event viewer informed me about this error:<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: red\">Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (64-bit) &#8212; Error 29530. Failed to set registry settings for server network libraries. The action is SetShilohRoot. The error is 2 (The system cannot find the file specified).<\/p>\n<p>As many people, I \u201cgoogled\u201d the error 29530 and saw this discussion on the msdn forum <a title=\"SQL Server 2005 error 29530 msdn\" href=\"https:\/\/social.msdn.microsoft.com\/Forums\/sqlserver\/en-US\/aa98c62c-bda4-4dfa-bec9-690afbb5951a\/uninstalling-sql-server-2005-64bit-in-clustered-environment?forum=sqlsetupandupgrade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I tried these solutions to resolve my issue but I still had the same error&#8230; \u2639<br \/>\nThen I analyzed the <strong>summary.txt<\/strong> from the uninstallation in the folder<strong> C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOG<\/strong> to see if I had more information about the uninstallation problem.<br \/>\nIn the file, I read this error:<\/p>\n<p><em>Microsoft SQL Server 2005 9.00.5000.00<br \/>\n==============================<br \/>\nOS Version\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 : Server 4.0, Enterprise Edition Service Pack 1 (Build 7601)<br \/>\nTime\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 : Tue May 03 21:34:59 2016<br \/>\nNode01: Failed to find the ASP.Net Version Registration with Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS).<br \/>\nMachine\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 : Node01<br \/>\nProduct\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 : SQL Server Database Services<br \/>\nError\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 : The setup has encountered an unexpected error while Completing Commit. For more information, review the Setup log file in %ProgramFiles%Microsoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGSummary.txt.<br \/>\nTime\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 : Tue May 03 21:37:14 2016<br \/>\nList of log files:<br \/>\nC:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGFilesSQLSetup0016_node02_Core(Local).log<br \/>\nC:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGFilesSQLSetup0016_node02_Datastore.xml<br \/>\nC:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGFilesSQLSetup0016_node02_.NET Framework 2.0.log<br \/>\nC:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGSummary.txt<br \/>\nC:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGFilesSQLSetup0016_node02_SCC.log<br \/>\nC:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGFilesSQLSetup0016_node02_WI.log<br \/>\n\\node02C$Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGFilesSQLSetup0016_node01_Logs.cab<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The important information was this log:<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: red\"><strong><em>Node01: Failed to find the ASP.Net Version Registration with Microsoft Internet Information Services<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It was very strange, Reporting Services was not installed but IIS had to be installed to continue the uninstallation process.<br \/>\nPerhaps, we needed to reactivate IIS or register again the component on both nodes:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.windowstechupdates.com\/asp-net-version-registration-requirement-during-installation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.windowstechupdates.com\/asp-net-version-registration-requirement-during-installation\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And it was the only way to do the uninstall\u2026 <strong>NO!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Finally, the problem was totally different\u2026 A simple permission problem!<br \/>\nThe login was &#8220;domain admin&#8221; and also &#8220;local admin&#8221; on both nodes but apparently it is not enough\u2026<br \/>\nOn Windows Server 2008R2, the \u201cControl Panel &gt; Programs and Features\u201d needed to be run as administrator!<\/p>\n<p>The solution is very simple but hard to find \ud83d\ude09 :<br \/>\n<strong>1. Run the command prompt as Administrator<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> 2. Enter appwiz.cpl (Programs and Features command)<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> 3. Run the uninstall of SQL Server 2005<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Et voil\u00e0!
