The project includes many instances, more or less 50, divided in two environment (Production and Test) and different versions of SQL Server as 2008, 2012 and 2014. The defined target was to create two groups of instances, respectively Production and Test, in order to manage differently the alert&#8217;s subscription.<br \/>\nLet\u2019s see how to implement that with System Center 2012 R2.<\/p>\n<p>First of all, open the Operations console and go to the Authoring workspace, navigate to Groups and click the \u201cCreate a New Group\u201d button:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Scom_Group0.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-8189\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Scom_Group0.jpg\" alt=\"Scom_Group0\" width=\"300\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Enter a name to your group as well as a description. Then select or create a destination Management Pack and finally click the Next button:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Scom_Group1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-8190\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Scom_Group1.jpg\" alt=\"Scom_Group1\" width=\"300\" height=\"249\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the Explicit Group Members section, we will not choose specific objects as we want they are directly sorted by their names. Adding or removing objects can be done by clicking the button \u201cAd\/Remove objects\u2026\u201d.<br \/>\nClick Next:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Scom_Group2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-8191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Scom_Group2.jpg\" alt=\"Scom_Group2\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the Create a Membership Formula section, to create a formula to dynamically populate the group, click the \u201cCreate\/Edit rules\u2026\u201d button:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Scom_Group11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-8180\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Scom_Group11.jpg\" alt=\"Scom_Group11\" width=\"300\" height=\"249\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the Query Builder screen, select the class you want to add to the formula, here \u201cSQL Server 2008 DB Engine\u201d and click the Add button. Do the same with the other classes you want to include: \u201cSQL Server 2012 DB Engine\u201d and \u201cSQL Server 2014 DB Engine\u201d.<br \/>\nSelect for each group the Property \u201cInstance Name\u201d, the operator \u201cContains\u201d and type \u201cT\u201d for the value as all Test instances contain a T in their name.<br \/>\nClick OK when all is well configured:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Scom_Group12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-8181\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Scom_Group12.jpg\" alt=\"Scom_Group12\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The formula is displayed in the \u201cQuery formula\u201d box. Click the Next button if all is good otherwise click the \u201cCreate\/Edit rules\u201d button:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Scom_Group13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-8182\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Scom_Group13.jpg\" alt=\"Scom_Group13\" width=\"300\" height=\"248\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Optionally, it is possible to add a subgroup to our group if needed. In this case, we have to click the \u201cAdd\/Remove Subgroups\u2026\u201d and after click Next:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Scom_Group14.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-8183\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Scom_Group14.jpg\" alt=\"Scom_Group14\" width=\"300\" height=\"248\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is also possible to exclude objects which solve a formula but we don\u2019t need this for the moment. To do it, click the button \u201cExclude Objects\u2026\u201d:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Scom_Group16.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-8185\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Scom_Group16.jpg\" alt=\"Scom_Group16\" width=\"300\" height=\"249\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Search for objects you want to exclude, for example \u201cSQL Server 2012 Engine\u201d in this case and click the \u201cSearch\u201d button.<br \/>\nA list of objects to remove appears and it is now possible to select each one and click \u201cAdd\u201d to exclude it from the group.<br \/>\nHere I will not exclude any SQL Server Instances, so click the \u201cCancel\u201d button otherwise click OK:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Scom_Group15.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-8184\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Scom_Group15.jpg\" alt=\"Scom_Group15\" width=\"300\" height=\"290\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To validate the creation of the group, click the \u201cCreate\u201d button:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Scom_Group17.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-8186\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Scom_Group17.jpg\" alt=\"Scom_Group17\" width=\"300\" height=\"249\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The new group has been created successfully and to check the member of the group, right click on the group line and select \u201cView Group Members\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Scom_Group19.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-8187\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Scom_Group19.jpg\" alt=\"Scom_Group19\" width=\"300\" height=\"171\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The group members are displayed on a screen.
