Why? Because I&#8217;d like to use such a cloud instance for testing no matter on which workstation or OS I am currently on. Another reason is, that I could could prepare some demos at home and use the same demos at work without needing to worry about taking the database with me each time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"system-readmore\" class=\"mceItemReadMore\" title=\"Read More\" src=\"http:\/\/wwwold.dbi-services.com\/plugins\/editors\/jce\/tiny_mce\/plugins\/article\/img\/trans.gif\" alt=\"Read More\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are probable many more services than the two I&#8217;ll show here. But for the scope of this post the two shall be sufficient.<\/p>\n<h1>ElephantSQL<\/h1>\n<p>The first service which popped up and seemed fine for my requirements was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elephantsql.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">ElephantSQL<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"easyblog-thumb-preview\" title=\"pgcloud1.png\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/pgcloud1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pgcloud1.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/pgcloud1.png\" alt=\"pgcloud1.png\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are various plans one can choose from after registering with a username and password:<br \/>\n<a class=\"easyblog-thumb-preview\" title=\"pgcloud2.png\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/pgcloud2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pgcloud2.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/pgcloud2.png\" alt=\"pgcloud2.png\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;TINY TURTLE&#8221; plan is the only one for free and 20MB of data seems to be very low for a database. But it still might be beneficial for little demos. So I decided to give it a try, registered and created a PostgreSQL database on the ElephantSQL website. The database is available immediately and there is a minimal management console which provides the basic parameters you&#8217;ll need to know for connecting:<br \/>\n<a class=\"easyblog-thumb-preview\" title=\"pgcloud3.png\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/pgcloud3.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pgcloud3.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/pgcloud3.png\" alt=\"pgcloud3.png\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s give it a try and try to connect with my local version of psql:<br \/>\n<a class=\"easyblog-thumb-preview\" title=\"pgcloud4_20150614-104201_1.png\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/pgcloud4_20150614-104201_1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pgcloud4_20150614-104201_1.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/pgcloud4_20150614-104201_1.png\" alt=\"pgcloud4.png\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This works pretty well and I could start with whatever I want to do with that database.<\/p>\n<p>Pros:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Easy to setup<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Cons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A rather old version of PostgreSQL<\/li>\n<li>Only 20MB storage to play with<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>heroku<\/h1>\n<p>Another provider which offers a free PostgreSQL cloud database is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heroku.com\" target=\"_blank\">heroku<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"easyblog-thumb-preview\" title=\"pgcloud5.png\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/pgcloud5.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pgcloud5.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/pgcloud5.png\" alt=\"pgcloud5.png\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As with ElephantSQL there are several options to choose from:<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"easyblog-thumb-preview\" title=\"pgcloud6.png\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/pgcloud6.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pgcloud6.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/pgcloud6.png\" alt=\"pgcloud6.png\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This time the limit is not measured in MB but in number of rows. 10&#8217;000 rows could be enough or could not \ud83d\ude42 Again, I decided to give it try. It is almost the same procedure as with ElephantSQL. Register with a username and password and create your PostgreSQL database. There is a dashboard again which shows the basic parameters of your PostgreSQL database:<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"easyblog-thumb-preview\" title=\"pgcloud7.png\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/pgcloud7.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pgcloud7.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/pgcloud7.png\" alt=\"pgcloud6.png\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Same test, let&#8217;s try to connect:<br \/>\n<a class=\"easyblog-thumb-preview\" title=\"pgcloud8.png\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/pgcloud8.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pgcloud8.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/pgcloud8.png\" alt=\"pgcloud6.png\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This works pretty well, too and I could start with whatever I want to do with that database.<\/p>\n<p>Pros:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Easy to setup<\/li>\n<li>A recent version of PostgreSQL<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Cons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Only 10&#8217;000 rows to play with<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Summary<\/h1>\n<p>Both of the above providers provide a free PostgreSQL cloud database. Both are backed by amazon and both are really easy to setup. As both are free there are limits (which is fine, as it&#8217;s free). Over time, Daniel has become increasingly interested in open source technologies, becoming \u201cTechnology Leader Open Infrastructure\u201d and PostgreSQL expert. \u00a0Based on community or EnterpriseDB tools, he develops and installs complex high available solutions with PostgreSQL. He is also a certified PostgreSQL Plus 9.0 Professional and a Postgres Advanced Server 9.4 Professional. He is a regular speaker at PostgreSQL conferences in Switzerland and Europe. Today Daniel is also supporting our customers on AWS services such as AWS RDS, database migrations into the cloud, EC2 and automated infrastructure management with AWS SSM (System Manager). He is a certified AWS Solutions Architect Professional. Prior to dbi services, Daniel was Management System Engineer at LC SYSTEMS-Engineering AG in Basel. Before that, he worked as Oracle Developper &amp;\u00a0Project Manager at Delta Energy Solutions AG in Basel (today Powel AG). Daniel holds a diploma in Business Informatics (DHBW, Germany).
