The WebLogic Configuration Wizard launched successfully through SSH X11 forwarding, but the graphical interface became unresponsive during the reconfiguration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was no obvious error message, and the wizard could not proceed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"215\" height=\"236\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/10\/image-73.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-47948\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The solution turned out to be a single Java parameter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-fix\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Fix<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before launching the Configuration Wizard, disable the Java 2D XRender pipeline:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>export _JAVA_OPTIONS=\"-Dsun.java2d.xrender=false\"<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then launch the wizard:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>$ORACLE_HOME\/oracle_common\/common\/bin\/config.sh -log=\/u00\/app\/oracle\/product\/14c\/reconfig_logs\/oid_domain_20261019\/reconfig_oid_domain_20261019.log -log_priority=ALL<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In my environment, this resolved the issue immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-does-it-work\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Does It Work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Java graphical applications use different rendering pipelines on Linux, including X11 and XRender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>XRender<\/strong> is a Java 2D rendering pipeline that uses the X Render extension to accelerate certain graphical operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, in remote graphical environments using SSH X11 forwarding, compatibility problems between the JVM, XRender, and the X server can sometimes cause graphical applications to freeze or become unresponsive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Setting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>-Dsun.java2d.xrender=false<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">disables the XRender pipeline, allowing Java 2D to fall back to the traditional X11 rendering pipeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This avoids the problematic rendering path without modifying the Oracle installation or domain configuration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-confirming-the-fix\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Confirming the Fix<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Initially, I tested two Java parameters together:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>export _JAVA_OPTIONS=\"-Dsun.java2d.xrender=false -Dsun.java2d.opengl=false\"<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wizard worked, but it was unclear which parameter made the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the reconfiguration of another domain, I repeated the test using <strong>only<\/strong> <code><strong>-Dsun.java2d.xrender=false<\/strong><\/code>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Configuration Wizard worked correctly again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This confirmed that disabling XRender alone was sufficient in this environment. Disabling OpenGL was unnecessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-oracle-already-documents-this-behavior\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Oracle Already Documents This Behavior<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After resolving the issue, I checked Oracle&#8217;s official Java documentation and found that this behavior is already documented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.oracle.com\/en\/java\/javase\/25\/troubleshoot\/java-2d-properties.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Java 2D Properties<\/a> on Linux documentation, Oracle describes the sun.java2d.xrender property and explains that setting it to false disables the XRender pipeline and falls back to the basic X11 pipeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is exactly the behavior we wanted to achieve:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>-Dsun.java2d.xrender=false<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oracle does not specifically associate this parameter with the WebLogic Configuration Wizard freezing during domain reconfiguration. However, the documented rendering mechanism explains why this workaround can help in an environment using remote X11 forwarding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-conclusion\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the Oracle WebLogic Configuration Wizard freezes when running through X11 forwarding on Linux, try disabling the Java 2D XRender pipeline before investigating more complex causes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A single JVM parameter is enough:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>export _JAVA_OPTIONS=\"-Dsun.java2d.xrender=false\"<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This workaround was successfully validated during two domain reconfigurations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It does not prove the exact underlying XRender incompatibility, but it demonstrates that the rendering pipeline was a contributing factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After completing the configuration, remove the temporary setting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>unset _JAVA_OPTIONS<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/tag\/oracle-fusion-middleware\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Related blogs<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During an Oracle Fusion Middleware 14.1.2 upgrade, I encountered an issue while reconfiguring an existing Oracle ADF domain.
