Everything proceeded smoothly until I reached the step of deploying a report to the server, where I encountered an interesting authentication challenge that highlights the complexities of working with mixed domain environments. The report deployment phase revealed an unexpected authentication error that required a deeper understanding of Windows authentication mechanisms and network name resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This blog provides a detailed solution to avoid this error, ensuring seamless deployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-context\">2&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Context<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>To simulate a production-like environment, I architected my lab environment with the following components:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Development Environment<\/strong>: A domain-joined laptop running Power BI Desktop<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Database Server<\/strong>: A Hyper-V virtual machine (WIN-LAB1) hosting the database infrastructure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Power BI Report Server<\/strong>: A separate Hyper-V virtual machine (WIN-LAB3) for report hosting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The workflow was designed to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Develop a report on the laptop using Power BI Desktop.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Save the report to the Power BI Report Server to enable on-premises sharing of reports and dashboards.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-problem-statement\">3&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Problem Statement<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The implementation involved several steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-1-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-development-environment\">3.1&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Development environment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>My development environment consisted of a domain-joined laptop running Power BI Desktop. It&#8217;s crucial to note that Power BI Desktop comes in two distinct flavors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Standard Power BI Desktop<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Designed for cloud service deployment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Features monthly release cycles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Includes preview features<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Power BI Desktop for Report Server<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Specifically optimized for on-premises deployment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follows a triannual release schedule (January, May, September)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Limited to generally available features<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The required application was <strong>Power BI Desktop for Power BI Report Server<\/strong> (September 2024 version), ensuring compatibility with the installed server version. You can download this version from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/download\/details.aspx?id=106034\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-2-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-database-server\">3.2&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Database Server<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>WIN-LAB1 is a VM running Windows Server 2022, with SQL Server 2022 and SSMS 20.2 installed. This VM is not part of an Active Directory domain. The AdventureWorksDW2022 database backup, available <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/sql\/samples\/adventureworks-install-configure?view=sql-server-ver16&amp;tabs=ssms\">here<\/a>, was used as the data source for report development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Developer Edition of SQL Server 2022, licensed for non-productive use can be downloaded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/sql-server\/sql-server-downloads\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-3-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-power-bi-report-server\">3.3&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Power BI Report Server<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>WIN-LAB3 is another VM running Power BI Report Server in Developer mode, which can be downloaded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/download\/details.aspx?id=105945&amp;culture=en-us&amp;country=us\">here<\/a>. However, this led to an &#8220;<strong>Unexpected error encountered<\/strong>&#8221; message that required further investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"688\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/image-9.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-36026\" style=\"width:675px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/image-9.png 940w, https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/image-9-300x220.png 300w, https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/image-9-768x562.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"944\" height=\"719\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/image-11.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-36028\" style=\"width:674px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/image-11.png 944w, https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/image-11-300x228.png 300w, https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/image-11-768x585.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 944px) 100vw, 944px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-root-cause-analysis\">4&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Root Cause Analysis<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>On WIN-LAB3, neither the Event Viewer logs nor the server log files (C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Power BI Report Server\\PBIRS\\LogFiles) provided useful details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However &#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The development machine&#8217;s Event Viewer exposed two critical issues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Name Resolution failure on the domain controller<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Active Directory Replication Latency issues<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"598\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/image-12.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-36031\" style=\"width:739px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/image-12.png 940w, https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/image-12-300x191.png 300w, https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/image-12-768x489.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The error occurs because Power BI Report Server defaults to Windows Authentication. This requires:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Both machines to be in a trusted domain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Valid credentials for access.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Since WIN-LAB3 is not part of a domain but my laptop is, the system failed to resolve WIN-LAB3\u2019s name and authenticate using valid credentials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-nbsp-solution\">5&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Solution<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>To resolve the issue, I implemented the following steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 1: Retrieve the IP Address of WIN-LAB3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Connect to WIN-LAB3 and run <strong>ipconfig<\/strong> command<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Connect to WIN-LAB3 and execute the ipconfig command to obtain its IP address.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"497\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/image-13.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-36033\" style=\"width:688px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/image-13.png 940w, https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/image-13-300x159.png 300w, https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/image-13-768x406.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 2: Update the Laptop&#8217;s Hosts File<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Add an entry mapping the IP address of WIN-LAB3 to its name in the hosts file (C:\\Windows\\System32\\drivers\\etc\\hosts).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"944\" height=\"574\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/image-14.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-36034\" style=\"width:691px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/image-14.png 944w, https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/image-14-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/image-14-768x467.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 944px) 100vw, 944px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 3: Configure Network Credentials<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open <strong>Credential Manager<\/strong> (Control Panel &gt;
