{"id":33414,"date":"2024-06-10T16:35:45","date_gmt":"2024-06-10T14:35:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/?p=33414"},"modified":"2024-06-13T13:32:39","modified_gmt":"2024-06-13T11:32:39","slug":"m-files-migrate-vaults-to-a-high-available-environment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/m-files-migrate-vaults-to-a-high-available-environment\/","title":{"rendered":"M-Files, Migrate Vaults to a High Available environment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>If you read my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/how-i-killed-my-m-files-instanceand-brought-it-back-to-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">previous blog<\/a>, you know why I&#8217;m doing a migration \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If not let&#8217;s explain it a bit, since 1 year I play with M-Files using an VM in the cloud, but I reached the limits and running a lot of Vaults start to become costly for a simple playground.<br>Additionally as the VM is stopped during the night I can&#8217;t simulate a real prod environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I decided to move my Vaults to a nice On Premise and highly available environment (Multi Server Mode).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/image-30-300x300.png\" alt=\"Be happy!\" class=\"wp-image-33596\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/image-30-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/image-30-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/image-30-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/image-30.png 796w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>There are two main scenario: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-firebird-vault\">1. Firebird Vault<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In case of a simple Vault is created using the embedded Firebird DB nothing really challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You perform a Full backup on the source<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"647\" height=\"125\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/Backup.jpg\" alt=\"Vault backup\" class=\"wp-image-33589\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/Backup.jpg 647w, https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/Backup-300x58.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 647px) 100vw, 647px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>You move the backup file to the target and restore it:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"115\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/Restore.jpg\" alt=\"Restore Document Vault\" class=\"wp-image-33590\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Restoring a Firebird Vault can only be done on a local drive and cannot use the high availability features of my environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it is only for a small demo then it can be fine, otherwise we can do the following steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Migrate to a Microsoft SQL Server<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"562\" height=\"158\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/VaultMigrate.jpg\" alt=\"Migrate to MS SQL\" class=\"wp-image-33591\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/VaultMigrate.jpg 562w, https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/VaultMigrate-300x84.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 562px) 100vw, 562px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Enter the required information to connect to the MSSQL instance, be careful the &#8220;Basic user credentials&#8221; <strong>must be<\/strong> an existing login in the SQL Server instance, M-Files cannot generate it as you may need to configure it on another node.  <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"432\" height=\"572\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/SQLinfo.jpg\" alt=\"SQL configuration\" class=\"wp-image-33592\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/SQLinfo.jpg 432w, https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/SQLinfo-227x300.jpg 227w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Click on &#8220;Test connection&#8221; to be sure everything is ok and ten proceed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After some minutes (depends the Vault size) the migration is done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it&#8217;s not over yet, maybe you haven&#8217;t noticed, but it was not possible to change the Data Location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must move it to a shared space in order to mount it to a second node, so for that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Take the Vault offline<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Copy the data from the source to the right place<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Change the Vault configuration (right click and Properties)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bring the Vault online<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Perform some testing to ensure everything is OK.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Now you are ready to configure another M-Files server node. Locally in the admin console of the second server, do an &#8220;Attach Document Vault&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"112\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/image-29.png\" alt=\"Attach Vault\" class=\"wp-image-33594\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/image-29.png 350w, https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/image-29-300x96.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p> Put a Name and then enter again the same details as previously, DB setting and disk, click OK and the Vault should mount properly on your second server.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well done you have successfully moved Vault to a HA setup!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-mssql-vault\">2. MSSQL Vault <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now let&#8217;s see what to do to move a Vault using a Microsoft SQL database<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Good news if you read carefully the chapter one, you already have most of the steps \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stop the Vault on the source<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take a backup of your MSSQL DB<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you want to change the database server, restore your backup to the new instance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Copy the data files (the ones in Server Vaults folder) to a shared space.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do an &#8220;Attach Document Vault&#8221; like we did in the chapter one.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do it again on all the nodes you have.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>So simple, isn&#8217;t it?
