Here are two quite old post on how to do this, one for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/configuring-huge-pages-for-your-postgresql-instance-debian-version\/\">Debian<\/a> systems, one for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/configuring-huge-pages-for-your-postgresql-instance-redhatcentos-version\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Red Hat<\/a> based systems. We usually do it the same way on all distributions using <a href=\"https:\/\/tuned-project.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TuneD<\/a>, because then we only have one way of doing it, no matter the distribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One Windows, the story is a bit different, of course, and this is the topic of this post. In my example setup I am using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows-server\">Windows Server 2022<\/a>, but I guess the procedure is the same for other versions on Windows Server.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve used the standard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.postgresql.org\/download\/windows\/\">PostgreSQL installer<\/a> to install PostgreSQL and did not do anything special, just followed the wizard. Once that was done a new service was created and PostgreSQL was up and running in the default configuration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you try to turn &#8220;huge_pages&#8221; to on without configuring the operating system, the service will not be able to re-start:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-syntaxhighlighter-code \"><pre class=\"brush: powershell; title: ; notranslate\" title=\"\">\npostgres=$ select version();\nActive code page: 1252\n                          version\n------------------------------------------------------------\n PostgreSQL 16.3, compiled by Visual C++ build 1938, 64-bit\n(1 row)\n\n\npostgres=$ alter system set huge_pages=on;\nALTER SYSTEM\npostgres=$ exit\nPS C:\\Users\\Administrator&gt; Stop-Service postgresql-x64-16\nPS C:\\Users\\Administrator&gt; Start-Service postgresql-x64-16\nStart-Service : Failed to start service &#039;postgresql-x64-16 - PostgreSQL Server 16 (postgresql-x64-16)&#039;.\nAt line:1 char:1\n+ Start-Service postgresql-x64-16\n+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\n    + CategoryInfo          : OpenError: (System.ServiceProcess.ServiceController:ServiceController) &#x5B;Start-Service],\n   ServiceCommandException\n    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : StartServiceFailed,Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.StartServiceCommand\n\nPS C:\\Users\\Administrator&gt;\n<\/pre><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The reason for this is reported in the event log:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"626\" height=\"436\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/Screenshot_20240603_113414.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33376\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/Screenshot_20240603_113414.png 626w, https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/Screenshot_20240603_113414-300x209.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 626px) 100vw, 626px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The error message is pretty clear, so what you need to do is to grant the &#8220;Lock pages in memory&#8221; privilege to the user which is running the service.
