: AlwaysOn High Availability &#8211; Restore is blocked"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During our test to create a failover clustering with the new function &#8216;AlwaysOn High Availability&#8217;, we had a few difficulties to overcome like the databases restore on the secondary cluster node.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, we will explain how to avoid it before encountering the problem.<\/p>\n<h3>Environment<\/h3>\n<p>VMTESTSQL02 is an AD-DC (Active Directory &#8211; Domain Controller) server (It should not be confused with ACDC, the Hard Rock Group :roll:) with the domain TESTSQL.<br \/>\nVMTESTSHPT01 is a SQL Server &#8216;Denali&#8217; with AdventureWork and is the Primary Server for the Failover Clustering<br \/>\nVMTESTSQL03 is a SQL Server &#8216;Denali&#8217; without database and will be the Secondary Server for the Failover Clustering<\/p>\n<p>The Cluster VMTESTSQL is a Windows Cluster and not a SQL Server cluster.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/00-Denali-archi.png\" alt=\"00-Denali-archi\" width=\"645\" height=\"355\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Installation<\/h3>\n<p>For the SQL Server installation, we install a new SQL Server in stand-alone mode.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/01-Denali-install.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"546\" height=\"232\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The most important for this article is the account name for the SQL Server Database Engine Services in the Server Configuration page within the installation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/02-Denali-install.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"572\" height=\"445\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Note that by default the services are secured through their account.<br \/>\nThey are no needs to create Windows service accounts unlike with previous versions.<\/p>\n<h3>SQL Server Database Engine Service<\/h3>\n<p>If you open your Sql Server Configuration Manager, you can see that SQL Server Database Engine Services run with the account NT ServiceMSSQL$.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/03-Denali-Service.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"587\" height=\"117\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To create an AlwaysOn High Availability Group, you must enable it on the service property like this example:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/04-Denali-Serviceproperty.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"690\" height=\"441\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Logins Configuration<\/h3>\n<p>If you look in SSMS (Sql Server Management Studio), the Server Roles for the account NT ServiceMSSQL$, you can see that this account is sysadmin and have all right of the instance.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/05-Denali-ServerRole.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Create a &#8216;AlwaysOn High Availability&#8217; Group<\/h3>\n<p>For the Step 2,3 and 4, it&#8217;s the same for the 2 &#8220;SQL Server 2012&#8221; Servers.<br \/>\nTo create the &#8216;Availability Group&#8217;, we launch the SSMS of VMTESTSHPT01 with the database AdventureWork.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Step 1 : Choose Availability group name<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/06-Denali-AG.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"484\" height=\"446\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Step 2 : Select databases for the Availability Group<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/07-Denali-AG.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"488\" height=\"449\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Step 3 : Specify the Primary and the Secondary Server<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/08-Denali-AG.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"491\" height=\"453\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Step 4 : Create your Availability Group Listener<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/09-Denali-AG.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"497\" height=\"459\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Step 5 : Select a shared network location for the backup<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/10-Denali-AG.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"460\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To make sure that we have the appropriated rights on this share, we shared it with read\/write rights for everyone.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Step 6 : Test the validity of the configuration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/11-Denali-AG.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"521\" height=\"481\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Step 7 : Verify the configuration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/12-Denali-AG.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"489\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Before you click on the Finish button, create the script from your Availabily Group.<br \/>\nThis is to play again your scenario or to create a template with sqlcmd variables.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Step 8 : Creating the Availabily Group<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The last step is the creation itself. If you look the detail, you can see that the last step failed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/13-Denali-Error.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"590\" height=\"544\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here are the errors details :<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/14-Denali-Error.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"549\" height=\"218\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Verify the Services on the cluster<\/h3>\n<p>It&#8217;s running&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/16-Denali-severmanager.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"612\" height=\"374\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Verify the Secondary server<\/h3>\n<p>We can see that the database AdventureWorks stay in a restoring mode in the server VMTESTSQL03.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/15-Denali-sql03.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Why it doesn&#8217;t work ?<\/h3>\n<p>The account NT ServiceMSSQL$ is sysadmin but have not the right to restore a database from a shared directory.<br \/>\nThe first test is to grant the account with the role dbcreator. This is just to verify but it doesn&#8217;t work.<\/p>\n<p>The point is that for database mirroring, Domain service accounts is a prerequisite :<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/msdn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/ff878487%28v=SQL.110%29.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/msdn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/ff878487(v=SQL.110).aspx<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finnally, we have change the account to a domain account for the 2 servers.<br \/>\nIf you don&#8217;t change it for both servers, you have the same problem.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/17-Denali-changeAccount.png\" alt=\"17-Denali-changeAccount\" width=\"671\" height=\"458\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Take care, this operation needs a restart of the service.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/18-Denali-changeAccount.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"675\" height=\"132\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Add the user in the instance with sysadmin server role:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/19-Denali-changeAccount.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"248\" height=\"221\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And finally, it&#8217;s magic,\u00a0 your failover is operational!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/191-Denali-changeAccount.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"555\" height=\"510\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can see of the secondary server and the database is online..
