Striim is a data integration platform which can ingest real-time data from a variety of sources (SQL Server, Oracle, Kafka, Hadoop\u2026) and quickly deliver it to Cloud systems or even to an on-premise infrastructure.<br \/>\nThe goal today will be to do the creation of my schema data in my Azure SQL Database and run a first initial load of my data.<br \/>\nThe final step will be to execute real time DML on our target once executed on our source to provide for example offloaded live reporting capabilities without affecting the source.<\/p>\n<p>Once Striim platform has been installed and configured, we can open the application via Chrome and see this main screen:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/striim-installation_12-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55125\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/striim-installation_12-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"835\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nClick on Apps and select \u201cCreate new\u201d.<br \/>\nYou have the choose to create your flows by dragging in components in the \u201cBuild using Flow Designer\u201d part or you can select a faster way with \u201cBuild using Wizards\u201d which will propose you predefined wizards based on the source and target you have.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/striim-installation_13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55126\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/striim-installation_13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"835\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nI will use a Wizard for this example as the first task I need to perform is a first initial load on my Azure SQL Database.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/striim-installation_14.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55127\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/striim-installation_14.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"835\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nName your initial load:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/blog_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55135\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/blog_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"540\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nOnce done, a popup tells me that the new application has been created and I can start to enter information about my source database. For this example I will use a local instance where a database named Pokemon is available and connect with a specific SQL user:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/blog_2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55136\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/blog_2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"752\" height=\"666\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nA validation check is done based on your connection details and if Striim can connect to the source database you can go ahead:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/blog_3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55141\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/blog_3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"752\" height=\"662\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nWe have now to select which schemas to move, I will select just dbo.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/blog_4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55138\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/blog_4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"752\" height=\"662\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nOnce done Striim is validating the selected schema(s):<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/blog_5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55139\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/blog_5.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"752\" height=\"662\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFor the selected schema(s), we can now select the tables we would like to load. Some tables can be not selectable due to the error: \u201ctable cannot be moved due to incompatible Datatypes\u201d, for example tables containing uniqueidentifier are not supported. Please check this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.striim.com\/docs\/en\/----for-sql-server-sources.html\">compatibility matrix<\/a> to know more about it and unsupported types.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/blog_6.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55140\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/blog_6.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"752\" height=\"664\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nNow that the source is configured, we will enter the required information for our Target database, here an Azure SQL Database.<br \/>\nThe connection URL must have this format jdbc:sqlserver:\/\/targetservername:1433;DatabaseName=dbname.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/blog_7.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55128\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/blog_7.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"752\" height=\"668\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nStriim can help us to migrate the source schema to the target database and also to move the data. Let\u2019s agree with that and continue this process:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/blog_8.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55129\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/blog_8.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"752\" height=\"662\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nStriim is now validating information for the target connection.<br \/>\nif the connection is possible the schema(s) will be created on the target, the Striim application deployed and the data copied from the source to the target:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/blog_9.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55130\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/blog_9.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"751\" height=\"663\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nClicking the Next button will give a resume of the application progress with information like the number of transferred rows, the rate\u2026<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/blog_10.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55131\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/blog_10.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1376\" height=\"672\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nExecution of the application is now completed.<br \/>\nWe can view the source, the target and the stream we have just created.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/blog_11.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55132\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/blog_11.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1376\" height=\"671\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nTo be able to modify our application we have to undeploy it:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/blog_12.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55133\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/blog_12.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1376\" height=\"548\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nAfter modification if we want to rerun the application we have to Deploy it again.<br \/>\nWhen we come back to the application dashboard, we can see a new application named InitialLoadPok_schemaMigration.<br \/>\nThis application has been created automatically to manage the schema creation executed during the Schema Conversion step.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/blog_13.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55134\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/blog_13.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1376\" height=\"672\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIf we have some schemas changes between two Initial Load, we can drop tables on the targets and rerun this application which will recreate those tables with their new schemas.<\/p>\n<p>The initial load is now configured, our process is ready to be executed when the situation will require it. The next step will be to create a Streaming Integration with CDC from our SQL Server on premise to our Azure SQL Database to execute real time DML on our target.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In this blog-post I will discuss about my first test with Striim.
