{"id":17127,"date":"2022-02-20T04:14:08","date_gmt":"2022-02-20T03:14:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/how-to-use-the-licencing-control-m-reporting-tool\/"},"modified":"2022-05-31T16:35:40","modified_gmt":"2022-05-31T14:35:40","slug":"how-to-use-the-licencing-control-m-reporting-tool","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/how-to-use-the-licencing-control-m-reporting-tool\/","title":{"rendered":"How to use the licensing Control-M reporting tool"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BMC Software requests yearly a licencing report of the usage of Control-M at the customer site, for that they send you a request to generate a report by using a Usage Reporting Tool provided by them and send back the the generated Report.<br \/>\nWhen I tried to use the tool, I encountered an issue (java), I was using the version 9.0.19.200, therefore if you are facing with the same issue, I will explain you here a workaround.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nUsually, the Licensing mode is per Tasks or per Endpoint (number of active components = Agents, remote agents, plugins \u2026), here I will explain only when your licencing mode is per Tasks.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose is to use the Reporting usage tool available either with the installation of the Control-M client Workload automation (WLA) or downloaded from Bmc Support portal, then generates the requested reports to be sent back to BMC Software, but also how to resolve the issue with Java if you are facing with that.<\/p>\n<p>Note: you can also read additional instructions here <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmc.com\/content\/dam\/bmc\/corporate\/controlm-utility-instructions.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">controlm-utility-instructions<\/a><br \/>\n=&gt; Follow the instruction for \u201cReporting Task Usage\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>1. Launch the tool <\/h2>\n<p>From the Windows menu<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/Launch-Win-menu.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/Launch-Win-menu.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"298\" height=\"178\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54526\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I am using the version 9.0.19.200, if you are run the utility from Windows menu,  a cmd window is opened first, the after the java window, but if the cmd windows contains java error messages<br \/>\n=&gt; then don\u2019t go further, there is an issue with the java environment which the tool can\u2019t load. Preparation<\/H2><br \/>\n<H3>2.1\tDownload the tool<\/H3><br \/>\nDownload the Usage Reporting Tool on Bmc Support Portal =&gt; Electronic Product Distribution <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmc.com\/support\/support-central.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">support-central<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/download-tool.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><H3>2.2\tUnzip the package<\/H3><br \/>\nUnzip the file inn any working directory<br \/>\n<a \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><H3>2.3\tPreparation to launch the tool manually<\/H3><\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle\">\n<li>Open cmd prompt<\/li>\n<li>ssign the variable JAVA_HOME if not set<\/li>\n<p><ins datetime=\"2022-02-20T02:02:40+00:00\">Note<\/ins>: You can use the Control-M client Java_home<\/p>\n<li>set JAVA_HOME=C:Program FilesBMC SoftwareControl-M EMControlM_9_0_19_200JRE<\/li>\n<p><ins datetime=\"2022-02-20T02:02:40+00:00\">Note:<\/ins>Don\u2019t enclose with \u201c\u201d otherwise it wouldn\u2019t work<\/p>\n<li> Check your variable if it is well set by running this following command\n<pre class=\"brush: bash; gutter: true; first-line: 1; highlight: [1]\">\nC: TEMP&gt; \"%JAVA_HOME%\/bin\/java\" -version\nopenjdk version \"1.8.0_192\"\nOpenJDK Runtime Environment (AdoptOpenJDK)(build 1.8.0_192-b12)\nOpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (AdoptOpenJDK)(build 25.192-b12, mixed mode)\n<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><H2>3 Launch the Reporting tool <\/H2><\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle\">\n<li> Still in the cmd window where you set the variable %JAVA_HOME%, navigate to the folder where you unzipped the file<\/li>\n<li> Run the command : usagetool_run.cmd =&gt; a Windows form appears, now without the cmd windows containing the Java error as before in the background<\/li>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/welcome-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/welcome-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"808\" height=\"239\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54550\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<li> Enter the information regarding the connection to the emuser Control-M database.<br \/>\n* HOST<br \/>\n* PORT<br \/>\n* SERVICE_NAME or dbname<\/p>\n<p>For oracle, this can be found in the file: $HOME\/ctm_em\/oracle\/network\/admin\/tnsnames.ora<br \/>\nFor PostgreSQL in the file: $HOME\/pgsql\/data\/pg_service.conf<\/p>\n<p>You can enter the information per environment and generate a Report, e.g. Dev or all environments at once (Dev, Uat, Prod \u2026) in the Control-M environments form<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/Report-DB.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/Report-DB.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"810\" height=\"346\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54555\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<li>Then click on Next, it will try to connect to the EM database<br \/>\n1) If it fails, then you get this error message, you have to review the exact syntax defined in the database config file, usually the reason is eacuse the domain name is missing with the host name<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/erreor-definition.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2) If the connection is successfull you get this result<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/success.png\"><img wp-image-54560\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3) Generate the Reports<br \/>\nThis is the last Step, which is the to generate the reports.<br \/>\nWe get this form below showing that some reports were generated, and they are located under the sub-folder reports<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/generate.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" wp-image-54562\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><H2>4 List of Reports and other files generated<\/H2><br \/>\n<H3>4.1 Reports <\/H3><br \/>\nThe most interesting files are:<\/p>\n<li> ALL_per_task_.csv: it shows the count per  <\/li>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/liste_reports.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/liste_reports.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"811\" height=\"562\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54564\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<li> ALL_per_task_total.csv: it shows the total count for all environments <\/li>\n<li>ALL_per_taskmost_active.pdf: it shows also the total count for all environments but in a dashboard<\/li>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/most_active.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><H3>4.2 Configuration file <\/H3><br \/>\nIf you want to generate reports another day, you don\u2019t have to enter again the connexion parameters, they are saved in a configuration file under the subfolder .dataenv.txt.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/env.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
