{"id":16437,"date":"2021-06-09T14:43:53","date_gmt":"2021-06-09T12:43:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/sql-server-how-to-compare-server-and-database-collation\/"},"modified":"2021-06-09T14:43:53","modified_gmt":"2021-06-09T12:43:53","slug":"sql-server-how-to-compare-server-and-database-collation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/sql-server-how-to-compare-server-and-database-collation\/","title":{"rendered":"SQL Server: How to compare Server and Database Collation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes during an SQL Server audit, I check the collation of the server and the databases but every time separately.<br \/>\nThe goal of this blog is to give you a script to have both and compare it.<\/p>\n<p>First step is to have the server collation and the code page.<br \/>\nThe code page will help to see if the character set is the same.<br \/>\nFor example, for us, the 1252 is Latin\/Western European and the 1258 is Vietnamese.<br \/>\nThe collation is also good to have to see the case-sensitivity, accent- sensitivity, kanatype- sensitivity &amp; width- sensitivity.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: sql; gutter: true; first-line: 1\">SELECT CONVERT (varchar, SERVERPROPERTY('collation')) AS 'server_collation',collationproperty(CONVERT (varchar, SERVERPROPERTY('collation')), 'codepage') AS 'server_codepage'<\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/collation_01-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-50377 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/collation_01-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"37\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The second step is to have the collation from all databases with the view sys.databases:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: sql; gutter: true; first-line: 1\">SELECT db.name AS datebase_name, db.collation_name AS datebase_collation, collationproperty(db.collation_name, 'codepage') AS datebase_codepage FROM sys.databases AS db<\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/collation_02-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-50379 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/collation_02-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"75\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The last step is to merge these 2 queries in one and have all information about collation and code page:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: sql; gutter: true; first-line: 1\">SELECT CONVERT (varchar, SERVERPROPERTY('collation')) AS 'server_collation',collationproperty(CONVERT (varchar, SERVERPROPERTY('collation')), 'codepage') AS server_codepage ,\ndb.name AS datebase_name, db.collation_name AS datebase_collation, collationproperty(db.collation_name, 'codepage') AS datebase_codepage FROM sys.databases AS db<\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/collation_99.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-50376 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/collation_99.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"126\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To finish the script, you can add a clause \u201cwhere\u201d with the difference between the 2 code pages to have only what can be a problem:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: sql; gutter: true; first-line: 1\">SELECT CONVERT (varchar, SERVERPROPERTY('collation')) AS 'server_collation',collationproperty(CONVERT (varchar, SERVERPROPERTY('collation')), 'codepage') AS server_codepage ,\ndb.name AS datebase_name, db.collation_name AS datebase_collation, collationproperty(db.collation_name, 'codepage') AS datebase_codepage FROM sys.databases AS db\nwhere collationproperty(CONVERT (varchar, SERVERPROPERTY('collation')), 'codepage') != collationproperty(db.collation_name, 'codepage')<\/pre>\n<p>I hope this script can help you to see the collation and code page for the server and all databases.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes during an SQL Server audit, I check the collation of the server and the databases but every time separately.
