{"id":15609,"date":"2021-02-08T14:28:08","date_gmt":"2021-02-08T13:28:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/sql-server-tips-how-to-migrate-database-users-in-another-domain-without-touching-permissions\/"},"modified":"2021-02-08T14:28:08","modified_gmt":"2021-02-08T13:28:08","slug":"sql-server-tips-how-to-migrate-database-users-in-another-domain-without-touching-permissions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/sql-server-tips-how-to-migrate-database-users-in-another-domain-without-touching-permissions\/","title":{"rendered":"SQL Server tips: How to migrate database-users in another domain without touching permissions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By a customer, I must migrate a database from a domain to another.<br \/>\nThe goal is to keep the database-user permissions, take the new SID from the windows login of the new domain and change the database-user name.<br \/>\nIn my blog, I will do it with two dbi\u2019s domains:<br \/>\n&#8211; dbiservicech: The old domain<br \/>\n&#8211; dbiservicecorp: The new domain<\/p>\n<p>I have two Windows groups dbiservicech\\dbi-owner and dbiservicech\\dbi-reader in my database test-dbi.<br \/>\nI create two new AD groups in the new domain dbiservicecorp\\dbi-owner and dbiservicecorp\\dbi-reader.<br \/>\nI add these 2 groups in the instance:<br \/>\n<code><br \/>\nUSE [master]<br \/>\nGO<br \/>\nCREATE LOGIN [dbiservicecorp\\dbi-owner] FROM WINDOWS WITH DEFAULT_DATABASE=[master]<br \/>\nGO<br \/>\nCREATE LOGIN [dbiservicecorp\\dbi-reader] FROM WINDOWS WITH DEFAULT_DATABASE=[master]<br \/>\nGO<br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\nThe goal is to change the name of these groups inside the database:<br \/>\n&#8211; From dbiservicech\\dbi-owner to dbiservicecorp\\dbi-owner<br \/>\n&#8211; From dbiservicech\\dbi-reader to dbiservicecorp\\dbi-reader<\/p>\n<p>If I want to see the SID and name before the change, i use these select:<br \/>\n<code><br \/>\nselect sid,name from sys.syslogins<br \/>\nselect sid,name from [test-dbi].sys.sysusers<br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\nThe result told me that the SID and name are not aligned between the login &amp; database-user:<\/p>\n<p>sid 0x0105000000000005150000000F43744E3AB07D23ECE90E12B4CA0200 for the login dbiservicecorp\\dbi-owner<br \/>\nsid 0x0105000000000005150000000F43744E3AB07D23ECE90E12B5CA0200 for the login dbiservicecorp\\dbi-reader<\/p>\n<p>sid 0x010500000000000515000000F3092A0E6DFA8A62697C50F4347D0000 for the database-user dbiservicech\\dbi-owner<br \/>\nsid 0x010500000000000515000000F3092A0E6DFA8A62697C50F4357D0000 for the database-user dbiservicech\\dbi-reader<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/blog_multidomain01.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-47220 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/blog_multidomain01.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To adapt the SID and name, I use the ALTER USER command:<br \/>\n<code><br \/>\nUSE [test-dbi];<br \/>\nGO<br \/>\nALTER USER [dbiservicech\\dbi-owner] WITH NAME = [dbiservicecorp\\dbi-owner], LOGIN=[dbiservicecorp\\dbi-owner]<br \/>\nGO<br \/>\nALTER USER [dbiservicech\\dbi-reader] WITH NAME = [dbiservicecorp\\dbi-reader], LOGIN=[dbiservicecorp\\dbi-reader]<br \/>\nGO<br \/>\n<\/code><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; \u201cWith Name = \u201d change the name inside the database to be the same as the login<br \/>\n&#8211; \u201cWith Login = \u201c change the SID to be the same as the login<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/blog_multidomain02.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-47218 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/blog_multidomain02.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"292\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Et voila, with this simple command, you can easily migrate the database-users to a new domain without touching the permissions.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude0e<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By a customer, I must migrate a database from a domain to another.
