{"id":14240,"date":"2020-06-18T07:14:45","date_gmt":"2020-06-18T05:14:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/azure-migrate-how-to-assess-on-premises-servers-for-a-future-azure-migration\/"},"modified":"2024-09-10T15:55:40","modified_gmt":"2024-09-10T13:55:40","slug":"azure-migrate-how-to-assess-on-premises-servers-for-a-future-azure-migration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/azure-migrate-how-to-assess-on-premises-servers-for-a-future-azure-migration\/","title":{"rendered":"Azure Migrate: how to assess on-premises servers for a future Azure migration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Azure Migrate provides a set of tools to assess and migrate on-premise infrastructure like Hyper-V or VMware virtual machines, physical servers as well as SQL and other Databases, web application&#8230;<br \/>\nThe Azure Migrate overview page resumes the different key scenario available.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/AzureMigrate1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-40353\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/AzureMigrate1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"409\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nLets have a look how easily you can assess your Hyper-V virtual machines for a future migration to Azure via this migration tool.<br \/>\nYou need to add a tool to discover your VMs but before that you need to create a specific Resource Group for this Azure Migration, give a name to this project and a preferred location for your future Azure Virtual Machines.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/AzureMigrate3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-40354\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/AzureMigrate3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"959\" height=\"457\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once done you need to select the assessment tool followed by the migration tool. Personally, I choose the Azure ones but others ISV (independent software vendor) offerings are available.<br \/>\nAt the end of this process you can review your selection and if you are satisfied with your selection click on &#8220;Add tools&#8221; button:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/AzureMigrate6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-40355\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/AzureMigrate6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"460\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The next step is to discover your on-premise servers, here my Virtual machines. To do it you have two possibilities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>deploy an Azure migrate appliance, this appliance stays connected to Azure Migrate and will continuously discover your on-premises machines.<\/li>\n<li>use a CSV file to import an inventory of the VMs you would like to quickly assess to have a cost and also a compatibility view. If you need an accurate assessment you need to use the appliance, same if you want to migrate the assessed servers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For my first text I used a CSV file containing 3 Virtual machines. Once imported you can see in the Azure migrate Server Assessment my 3 discovered servers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/AzureMigrate12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-40357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/AzureMigrate12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"952\" height=\"444\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you click on discovered servers, you will have an overview of the server and you can see that they have been imported and not discovered by an appliance:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/AzureMigrate13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-40358\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/AzureMigrate13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"958\" height=\"318\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can now create a group which is a collection of machines you would like to assess and migrate together. In this example I took two machines from my imported ones:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/AzureMigrate14.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-40359\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/AzureMigrate14.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"959\" height=\"442\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now that your group is created you can run an assessment for this group by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>selecting Imported machines<\/li>\n<li>give a name to your assessment<\/li>\n<li>choose the sizing criteria for your assessment:\n<ul>\n<li>Performance-based: based on performance-data values specified<\/li>\n<li>As on-premises: based on on-premises sizing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>select or create a new group<\/li>\n<li>click the &#8220;Create assessment&#8221; button:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/AzureMigrate15.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-40360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/AzureMigrate15.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"957\" height=\"434\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After some minutes the assessment is available, you are able to visualize your assessment with 3 parts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Azure Readiness: tell you if your servers are ready for migration to Azure or if not shows problems &amp; possible remediation<\/li>\n<li>Monthly cost estimate: sum based on size recommendations for Azure VMs (compute) and associated VMs storage<\/li>\n<li>Storage &#8211; Monthly cost estimate: total storage cost split by storage type<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/AzureMigrate16-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-40617\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/AzureMigrate16-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"767\" height=\"340\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can have more information by clicking on each part of the assessment.<br \/>\nOn Azure Readiness you can see the type of Azure Virtual Machine which have been selected during the assessment, the number of disks per on-premises VM and their size:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/AzureMigrate17.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-40619\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/AzureMigrate17.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"961\" height=\"490\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you click on a specific on-premise machine you will have a more detailed view:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a green light for the migration + the Azure VM size + the estimated monthly coast divided between compute and storage<\/li>\n<li>the Operating System used on your VM<\/li>\n<li>A compute resumes with the number of cores and the size of the RAM<\/li>\n<li>the selected storage with the number of disks, the target disk type &amp; size<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/AzureMigrate18.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-40620\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/AzureMigrate18.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"456\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As written in the beginning of this blog I cannot migrate my on-premises Virtual Machines after this assessment as I didn&#8217;t use the Azure Migrate appliance to discover my on-premises servers.
