This means that for any database, the downtime should not exceed 52 minutes per year. Using Zone redundancy increases availability to 99.995% which is about 26 minutes per year.<\/p>\n<p>These impressive numbers can be achieved through <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/availability-zones\/az-overview\">in-region redundancy<\/a> of the compute and storage resources and automatic failover within the region.<\/p>\n<p>Some disruptive events may impact the region&#8217;s availability like Datacenter outage, possibly caused by a natural disaster.<br \/>\nTo protect against a Region disaster, <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/azure-sql\/database\/auto-failover-group-overview?tabs=azure-powershell#terminology-and-capabilities\">Auto-failover groups<\/a> can be configured to automatically failover one or multiple databases to another region.<\/p>\n<p>The technology behind Auto-failover group is the same as <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/azure-sql\/database\/active-geo-replication-overview\">geo-replication<\/a> but they are some <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/azure-sql\/database\/business-continuity-high-availability-disaster-recover-hadr-overview#compare-geo-replication-with-failover-groups\">differences<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/3-5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-40344 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/3-5.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"449\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In this blog post, we will configure an Auto-failover group for the database we previously created in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/how-to-create-an-azure-sql-database-using-azure-powershell\/\">a previous post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So I start with the simple configuration of multiple Azure SQL Databases on a single server.<\/p>\n<p><a
