{"id":12393,"date":"2019-04-30T09:51:36","date_gmt":"2019-04-30T07:51:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/how-to-create-an-azure-sql-database\/"},"modified":"2024-09-10T15:59:14","modified_gmt":"2024-09-10T13:59:14","slug":"how-to-create-an-azure-sql-database","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/how-to-create-an-azure-sql-database\/","title":{"rendered":"How to create an Azure SQL Database"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Azure SQL Database is a relational database-as-a-service (DBaaS) which gives us the possibility to create application with a performant database without to take care of the relying infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Azure SQL Database is based on the latest stable version of Microsoft SQL Server Database Engine.<\/p>\n<p>We have the choose between 2 purchasing models: a vCore-based purchasing model and a DTU-based (Database Throughput Unit) purchasing model.<\/p>\n<p>3 Deployment options possible:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>single database: has its own set of resources managed via SQL Database Server (similar to a <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/sql\/relational-databases\/databases\/contained-databases\">contained databases<\/a> in SQL Server)<\/li>\n<li>elastic pool: collection of databases with a shared set of resources managed via SQL Database Server<\/li>\n<li>Managed instances: collection of system and user databases with a shared set of resources (like an instance)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this blog I will show you how to create a single Azure SQL Database and how to connect it via a SQL Server Management Studio located on-premise.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Once connected to the Azure portal, click on \u201cSQL Database\u201d and after to the \u201cAdd\u201d button:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Azure_CreateDB1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-32110\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Azure_CreateDB1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once done we have first to select our subscription and create or select a resource group where our database will be created. A resource group is a collection of resource that share the same life cycle, permissions and policies.<br \/>\nHere I will use an existing one:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Azure_CreateDB2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-32111\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Azure_CreateDB2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"145\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, we give a name to our Azure Database and to store the database we will create a new server. For the new server a name is necessary, also an admin login and the location where we want to have our server, here West Europe.<br \/>\nWe don\u2019t select the option to use an Elastic pool and for the Compute and Storage options we will click on the \u201cConfigure Database\u201d link:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Azure_CreateDB3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-32112\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Azure_CreateDB3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By default, our database belongs to the Standard DTU-based purchasing model with 10 DTUs and a database maximum size of 250MB. The cost is directly linked to the number of DTUs selected so in fact linked to the level of \u201cpower\u201d (compute sizes, storage, backup retention\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/go.microsoft.com\/fwlink\/?linkid=842058\">see here for more information about DTUs<\/a>) we need for our database.<\/p>\n<p>Other options appear if we select the Premium service tier like read scale-out or zone redundant, but I let you discover that as the vCore purchasing model by yourself.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Azure_CreateDB4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-32113\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Azure_CreateDB4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"152\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once done, we go to the next additional settings:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Azure_CreateDB5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-32095\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Azure_CreateDB5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"228\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our database could be created with a backup of a database located in the subscription, from the AdventureWorksLT sample database or without any tables, schemas\u2026 so empty.<\/p>\n<p>The database collation could be changed depending on your need.<\/p>\n<p>An Advanced Data Security Package can be tested for free during 30 days. It will provide provides a set of advanced SQL security capabilities, including data discovery &amp; classification, vulnerability assessment, and Advanced Threat Protection.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Azure_CreateDB6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-32096\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Azure_CreateDB6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Create Tags to categorize and consolidate billings information:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Azure_CreateDB7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-32097\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Azure_CreateDB7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"177\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Review the information selected previously and launch the deployment of your Azure SQL Database.<br \/>\nThere is also a possibility to download a template to automate another database deployment:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Azure_CreateDB8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-32098\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Azure_CreateDB8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"216\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Azure_CreateDB9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-32099\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Azure_CreateDB9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"98\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The deployment is running:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Azure_CreateDB10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-32100\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Azure_CreateDB10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once done, the Azure SQL Database has been created:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Azure_CreateDB11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-32101\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Azure_CreateDB11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Go back to the SQL Databases and select our new Azure database named AzureDB-blog-1.<br \/>\nIn the overview menu we can find the Server name, we will try to use it on SSMS:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Azure_CreateDB12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-32102\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Azure_CreateDB12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"126\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I open a Management Studio located in my VMs environment on-premise. I try to connect to my Azure database with the server name found previously on port 1433 and my server admin login:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Azure_CreateDB13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-32103\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Azure_CreateDB13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"165\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It fails as my Azure database is protected under a firewall. I will need to open my IP address or a range of IP Addresses to be able to connect.
