We heard a lot of this new directive.<br \/>\nThe goal is to improve the protection and confidentiality of personally identifiable information for every European citizen. Quid of Switzerland? It can be a name, a photograph, an IP address, a phone number, a computer login, a mailing address, a fingerprint, a voice recording, social security number, email, etc. Some data are sensitive as they relate to information that may give rise to discrimination or prejudice.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft reacts with a<a title=\"Guide to enhancing privacy and addressing GDPR requirements with the Microsoft SQL platform\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/sql\/relational-databases\/security\/microsoft-sql-and-the-gdpr-requirements?view=sql-server-2017\" target=\"_blank\"> Guide to enhancing privacy and addressing GDPR requirements with the Microsoft SQL platform<\/a> and gives to the DBA a new feature with the latest version of SSMS (SQL Server Management Studio) 17: <a title=\"SQL Data Discovery and Classification\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/sql\/relational-databases\/security\/sql-data-discovery-and-classification?view=sql-server-2017\" target=\"_blank\">SQL Data Discovery and Classification<\/a>.<br \/>\nThis feature exists on SSMS since the version 17.5. I have installed the version 17.6 for this article.<br \/>\nOnce SSMS updated, just choose the database you want to scan, right click on the database and select Task, Classify Data\u2026:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/gdpr_sql_01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-23013 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/gdpr_sql_01.jpg\" alt=\"gdpr_sql_01\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After few seconds, you have the result of the scan and in my case 39 columns with classification recommendations:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/gdpr_sql_02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-23012 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/gdpr_sql_02.jpg\" alt=\"gdpr_sql_02\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Click on this result to see the detail:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/gdpr_sql_03.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-23011 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/gdpr_sql_03.jpg\" alt=\"gdpr_sql_03\" width=\"300\" height=\"153\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For each column, you will see an Information Type and a Sensitivity Label.<br \/>\nThe Information Type gives a better granularity of the type of data:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/gdpr_sql_04.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-23010 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/gdpr_sql_04.jpg\" alt=\"gdpr_sql_04\" width=\"229\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Sensitivity label is to have the level of sensitivity of the data:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/gdpr_sql_05.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-23009 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/gdpr_sql_05.jpg\" alt=\"gdpr_sql_05\" width=\"226\" height=\"209\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, you have 2 level for GDPR: Confidential and Highly Confidential.<br \/>\nYou can identify some information like for example the personal phone number and change from Confidential \u2013 GDPR to Highly Confidential \u2013 GDPR:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/gdpr_sql_06.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-23008 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/gdpr_sql_06.jpg\" alt=\"gdpr_sql_06\" width=\"300\" height=\"66\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After reviewed all columns and change the information Type and Sensitivity Label if needed, you can check all cases or only select few columns and click on \u201cAccept selected recommendations\u201d:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/gdpr_sql_07.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-23007 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/gdpr_sql_07.jpg\" alt=\"gdpr_sql_07\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After that save the result. Without saving the result, you cannot see the report\u2026<br \/>\nIf you want, you have also the possibility to add manually a classification through the button \u201cAdd Classification\u201d.<br \/>\nThe message \u201cThe classification changes have been updated successfully\u201d:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/gdpr_sql_09.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-23014 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/gdpr_sql_09.jpg\" alt=\"gdpr_sql_09\" width=\"300\" height=\"165\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the end you can click on View Report to have a global view and see with the application owner how to protect sensitive columns with features like Dynamic Data masking, Always Encrypted or a third-part tool.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/gdpr_sql_08.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-23006 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/gdpr_sql_08.jpg\" alt=\"gdpr_sql_08\" width=\"300\" height=\"176\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If I go to a classified column in the objects explorer, a right-click and select properties, I can see in the Extended Properties the information about the information type and sensitivity label:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/gdpr_sql_10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-23005 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/gdpr_sql_10.jpg\" alt=\"gdpr_sql_10\" width=\"300\" height=\"140\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nAs you can see the information is directly written to the column properties (Action of the save button).<\/p>\n<p>Like for Vulnerability Assessment, you need to run it database per database and you don\u2019t have the possibility to scan in one\u00a0 click all databases from an instance.
