{"id":11170,"date":"2018-04-30T15:02:54","date_gmt":"2018-04-30T13:02:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/oracle-18c-clone-pdb-and-transparent-data-encryption\/"},"modified":"2018-04-30T15:02:54","modified_gmt":"2018-04-30T13:02:54","slug":"oracle-18c-clone-pdb-and-transparent-data-encryption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/oracle-18c-clone-pdb-and-transparent-data-encryption\/","title":{"rendered":"Oracle 18c clone PDB and Transparent Data Encryption"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Let&#8217;s do some tests with the Oracle 18c new feature in creating PDB clone with DBCA.\u00a0Unfortunately, this feature does not work when you have TDE enabled.<\/p>\n<p>Just to remember, with Oracle 12.2 we had the possibility to create PDBs with dbca just from PDBseed to from unplugged PDBs:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/psi1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-22900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/psi1.png\" alt=\"psi1\" width=\"521\" height=\"397\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now in version 18c we can create PDBs from existing PDBs as follows (for this test TDE is disabled):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/psi2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-22901\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/psi2.png\" alt=\"psi2\" width=\"515\" height=\"391\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can choose the Pluggable Database you want to clone.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/psi3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-22902\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/psi3.png\" alt=\"psi3\" width=\"516\" height=\"394\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You select the name of your cloned PDB, and in less than 1 minute your original PDB is cloned:<\/p>\n<div>\n<pre class=\"brush: sql; gutter: false; first-line: 1\">oracle@localhost:\/u00\/app\/oracle\/oradata\/PSI\/ [DB18] sq\nSQL*Plus: Release 18.0.0.0.0 Production on Mon Apr 30 12:55:54 2018\nVersion 18.1.0.0.0\nCopyright (c) 1982, 2017, Oracle.  All rights reserved.\nConnected to:\nOracle Database 18c Enterprise Edition Release 18.0.0.0.0 - Production\nVersion 18.1.0.0.0\n\nSQL&gt; show pdbs\n   CON_ID CON_NAME         OPEN MODE  RESTRICTED\n\n      2   PDB$SEED         READ ONLY      NO\n\n      3   PDB1             READ WRITE     NO\n\n      5   PDBNEW           READ WRITE     NO<\/pre>\n<p class=\"DBICode\">\u00a0Let&#8217;s make some tests with PDBs and TDE.<\/p>\n<p>In Oracle 18c, it is no more mandatory to configure the sqlnet.ora file, we only have to define wallet_root and tde_configuration as follows:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: sql; gutter: false; first-line: 1\">SQL&gt; alter system set wallet_root='\/u00\/app\/oracle\/admin\/DB18\/wallet_cdb' scope=spfile;\nSQL&gt; startup force;\nORACLE instance started.\n\u00a0Total System Global Area 1677717664 bytes\nFixed Size\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 8896672 bytes\nVariable Size\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0520093696 bytes\nDatabase Buffers\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 1140850688 bytes\nRedo Buffers\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a07876608 bytes\nDatabase mounted.\nDatabase opened.\n\nSQL&gt; alter system set tde_configuration=\"keystore_configuration=file\" scope=both;\nSystem altered.<\/pre>\n<p>We create a management key in the CDB<\/p>\n<div>\n<pre class=\"brush: sql; gutter: false; first-line: 1\">SQL&gt; administer key management create keystore identified by manager_cdb;\nkeystore altered.<\/pre>\n<p>The wallet file is created:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: sql; gutter: false; first-line: 1\">SQL&gt; !ls \/u00\/app\/oracle\/admin\/DB18\/wallet_cdb\/tde\newallet.p12<\/pre>\n<p>We open the keystore for the CDB and the PDBs:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: sql; gutter: false; first-line: 1\">SQL&gt; administer key management set keystore open identified by manager_cdb \ncontainer=all;\nkeystore altered.<\/pre>\n<p>We check in the pluggable database:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: sql; gutter: false; first-line: 1\">SQL&gt; alter session set container=pdb1;\nSession altered.\nSQL&gt; select \u00a0status from v$encryption_wallet;\nSTATUS\nOPEN_NO_MASTER_KEY<\/pre>\n<p>But we receive open_no_master_key \u2026<\/p>\n<p>We return to the CDB:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: sql; gutter: false; first-line: 1\">SQL&gt; connect \/ as sysdba\nConnected.\nSQL&gt; administer key management set key identified by manager_cdb with backup;\nkeystore altered.<\/pre>\n<p>In the PDB:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: sql; gutter: false; first-line: 1\">SQL&gt; alter session set container=pdb1;\n\u00a0\nSession altered.\n\u00a0\nSQL&gt; ADMINISTER KEY MANAGEMENT SET KEY IDENTIFIED BY manager_cdb with backup;\n\u00a0\nkeystore altered.\n\u00a0\nSQL&gt; select status from v$encryption_wallet;\n\u00a0\nSTATUS\n\u00a0\nOPEN<\/pre>\n<p>The keystore is now opened in the PDB, we can encrypt the data. With Oracle 18c there are two modes: united (the CDB owns the keystore for itself and the PDBs) or isolated (the PDB has its own keystore). In our case we are in united mode, let\u2019s see if we can clone the PDB.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: sql; gutter: false; first-line: 1\">SQL&gt; SELECT KEYSTORE_MODE FROM V$ENCRYPTION_WALLET;\n\nKEYSTORE\n\nUNITED\n\n<\/pre>\n<p>We do the same operations as previously, but the assistant is asking us for the keystore password:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/psi4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-22903\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/psi4.png\" alt=\"psi4\" width=\"508\" height=\"387\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>By looking at oracle error messages, we can find a similar error on PDB switchover : \u201cMetalink Note 2378945.1: &#8220;We only support this with auto login wallet\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So I decided to implement auto login in my configuration and try to clone my PDB:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: sql; gutter: false; first-line: 1\">SQL&gt; administer key management create local auto_login keystore from keystore '\/u00\/app\/oracle\/admin\/DB18\/wallet_cdb\/tde' identified by manager_cdb;\n\nSQL&gt; startup force;\nORACLE instance started.\n\nTotal System Global Area 1677717664 bytes\nFixed Size\t\t    8896672 bytes\nVariable Size\t\t  520093696 bytes\nDatabase Buffers\t 1140850688 bytes\nRedo Buffers\t\t    7876608 bytes\nDatabase mounted.\nDatabase opened.<\/pre>\n<p>My PDB TDE configuration is in auto login mode:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: sql; gutter: false; first-line: 1\">SQL&gt; select wrl_type,status, wallet_type from v$encryption_wallet;\n\nWRL_TYPE\t     STATUS\t\t\t    WALLET_TYPE\nFILE\t\t     OPEN\t\t\t    LOCAL_AUTOLOGIN<\/pre>\n<p>But even if TDE is implemented in auto login mode, the PDB clone operation fails with the same ORA-46697 error message.<\/p>\n<p>We also encounter this bad behavior with the 18c new features about PDBs snapshot, which allows to create PDBs snapshots manually or automatically:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: sql; gutter: false; first-line: 1\">SQL&gt; create pluggable database snap_pdb1 from pdb1\n  2  file_name_convert = ('snap_pdb1', 'pdb1')\n  3* snapshot mode every 60 minutes\ncreate pluggable database snap_pdb1 from pdb1\n*\nERROR at line 1:\nORA-46697: Keystore password required.\n\n<\/pre>\n<p>Cloning PDBs is a very useful tool in order to realize mass deployment to development teams, it should be nice to make it work with TDE enabled.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: sql; gutter: false; first-line: 1\"><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let&#8217;s do some tests with the Oracle 18c new feature in creating PDB clone with DBCA.\u00a0Unfortunately, this feature does not work when you have TDE enabled.
