{"id":10789,"date":"2018-02-02T12:24:32","date_gmt":"2018-02-02T11:24:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/migrate-windows-vm-with-more-than-4-disks-from-vmware-to-ovm\/"},"modified":"2018-02-02T12:24:32","modified_gmt":"2018-02-02T11:24:32","slug":"migrate-windows-vm-with-more-than-4-disks-from-vmware-to-ovm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/migrate-windows-vm-with-more-than-4-disks-from-vmware-to-ovm\/","title":{"rendered":"Migrate Windows VM with more than 4 Disks from VMware to OVM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Suppose you got an OVA image created on VMware and the VM contains more than 4 Disks<br \/>\nand you have to migrate this machine from VMware to OVM.<\/p>\n<p>As first step you import the OVA into the OVM in the usual way:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Bildschirmfoto-2018-02-02-um-09.43.12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20872 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Bildschirmfoto-2018-02-02-um-09.43.12.jpg\" alt=\"Bildschirmfoto 2018-02-02 um 09.43.12\" width=\"1024\" height=\"533\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You\u00a0see the that the appliance was imported successfully, we have 5 disks:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Bildschirmfoto-2018-02-02-um-09.45.25.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20876 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Bildschirmfoto-2018-02-02-um-09.45.25.jpg\" alt=\"Bildschirmfoto 2018-02-02 um 09.45.25\" width=\"1024\" height=\"361\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now you create your VM from the imported appliance:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Bildschirmfoto-2018-02-02-um-09.47.34.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20877 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Bildschirmfoto-2018-02-02-um-09.47.34.jpg\" alt=\"Bildschirmfoto 2018-02-02 um 09.47.34\" width=\"1024\" height=\"775\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So far so good,\u00a0lets have a look on our newly created VM:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Bildschirmfoto-2018-02-02-um-09.51.22.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20879 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Bildschirmfoto-2018-02-02-um-09.51.22.jpg\" alt=\"Bildschirmfoto 2018-02-02 um 09.51.22\" width=\"1024\" height=\"218\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All seems good, but if you edit the machine (we want to add a network and give a boot order for the system) you will be surprised:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Bildschirmfoto-2018-02-02-um-10.11.35.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20882 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Bildschirmfoto-2018-02-02-um-10.11.35.jpg\" alt=\"Bildschirmfoto 2018-02-02 um 10.11.35\" width=\"1024\" height=\"325\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Oops, we lost a disk, what happened? You don&#8217;t make a mistake, its a restriction on OVM:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oracle.com\/us\/technologies\/virtualization\/ovm3-supported-config-max-459314.pdf\">http:\/\/www.oracle.com\/us\/technologies\/virtualization\/ovm3-supported-config-max-459314.pdf <\/a>states that a VM can have only 4 IDE disks in maximum, and if you import your Windows VM its considered as Xen HVM Domain Type, so you can only attach 4 disks to the VM.<\/p>\n<p>And now, how can we solve the problem? Lets first try, if we can boot the system:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Bildschirmfoto-2018-02-02-um-10.25.32.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20889 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Bildschirmfoto-2018-02-02-um-10.25.32.jpg\" alt=\"Bildschirmfoto 2018-02-02 um 10.25.32\" width=\"1024\" height=\"839\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ok system is up what next? We deinstall all the VMware utilities:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Bildschirmfoto-2018-02-02-um-10.35.40.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20891 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Bildschirmfoto-2018-02-02-um-10.35.40.jpg\" alt=\"Bildschirmfoto 2018-02-02 um 10.35.40\" width=\"950\" height=\"460\" \/><\/a>For the next step we download the\u00a0Oracle VM Server for x86 Windows PV Drivers &#8211; 3.4.2.0.0 for Microsoft Windows x64 (64-bit) from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edelivery.oracle.com\">https:\/\/edelivery.oracle.com<\/a>\u00a0and install them on our Windows Box:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Bildschirmfoto-2018-02-02-um-11.04.28.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20893 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Bildschirmfoto-2018-02-02-um-11.04.28.jpg\" alt=\"Bildschirmfoto 2018-02-02 um 11.04.28\" width=\"1024\" height=\"755\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After a system restart, all disks except the C: drive are gone:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Bildschirmfoto-2018-02-02-um-11.08.51.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20895 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Bildschirmfoto-2018-02-02-um-11.08.51.jpg\" alt=\"Bildschirmfoto 2018-02-02 um 11.08.51\" width=\"694\" height=\"792\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We shutdown the Windows Box and put the VM into the Xen HVM PV Driver Domain:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Bildschirmfoto-2018-02-02-um-12.07.39.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20897 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Bildschirmfoto-2018-02-02-um-12.07.39.jpg\" alt=\"Bildschirmfoto 2018-02-02 um 12.07.39\" width=\"1024\" height=\"799\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After that we can add our lost disk without any problems:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Bildschirmfoto-2018-02-02-um-12.09.00.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20898 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Bildschirmfoto-2018-02-02-um-12.09.00.jpg\" alt=\"Bildschirmfoto 2018-02-02 um 12.09.00\" width=\"1024\" height=\"804\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ok lets restart the system look what happens:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Bildschirmfoto-2018-02-02-um-12.16.48.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20899 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Bildschirmfoto-2018-02-02-um-12.16.48.jpg\" alt=\"Bildschirmfoto 2018-02-02 um 12.16.48\" width=\"1024\" height=\"689\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ok all disks are there, we can now bring them online:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Bildschirmfoto-2018-02-02-um-12.59.29.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20901 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Bildschirmfoto-2018-02-02-um-12.59.29.jpg\" alt=\"Bildschirmfoto 2018-02-02 um 12.59.29\" width=\"1024\" height=\"690\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After a reboot we can see that our drives are used correctly:<\/p>\n<p>ARC3: Archival started<br \/>\nLGWR: STARTING ARCH PROCESSES COMPLETE<br \/>\nThread 1 opened at log sequence 4743<br \/>\nCurrent log# 3 seq# 4743 mem# 0: I:\\ORADATA\\TESTIDM1\\REDO03.LOG<br \/>\nSuccessful open of redo thread 1<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Suppose you got an OVA image created on VMware and the VM contains more than 4 Disks and you have to migrate this machine from VMware to OVM.
