{"id":10751,"date":"2018-01-12T15:36:47","date_gmt":"2018-01-12T14:36:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/rman-debugging-during-catalog-import\/"},"modified":"2018-01-12T15:36:47","modified_gmt":"2018-01-12T14:36:47","slug":"rman-debugging-during-catalog-import","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dbi-services.com\/blog\/rman-debugging-during-catalog-import\/","title":{"rendered":"RMAN debugging during catalog import"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this post I would like to share how I have been able to troubleshoot and solve a catalog import issue using RMAN debug function.<\/p>\n<p>As we can see, the error message provided by RMAN is not very helpful.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: sql; gutter: true; first-line: 1\">oracle@vmtestoradg1:\/home\/oracle\/ [RCAT12C] rman catalog rcat\/manager\nRecovery Manager: Release 12.2.0.1.0\n\nconnected to recovery catalog database\n\nRMAN&gt; import catalog rcat\/manager@RCAT11G;\n\nStarting import catalog at 05-JAN-2018 14:11:45\nconnected to source recovery catalog database\nRMAN-00571: ===========================================================\nRMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============\nRMAN-00571: ===========================================================\nRMAN-03002: failure of import catalog command at 01\/05\/2018 14:11:46\nRMAN-06004: ORACLE error from recovery catalog database: ORA-00933: SQL command not properly ended\n\nRMAN&gt;<\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Instead of looking for possible more information in appropriate logs, we can easily use the RMAN debug function.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: sql; gutter: true; first-line: 1\">RMAN&gt; debug on;<\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By running the import command again we will be able to extract below useful information on the command RMAN is complaining about.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: sql; gutter: true; first-line: 1\">DBGSQL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 CREATE DATABASE LINK\nDBGSQL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 RCAT11G.IT.DBI-SERVICES.COM\nDBGSQL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 CONNECT\nDBGSQL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 TO\nDBGSQL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \"RCAT\"\nDBGSQL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 IDENTIFIED BY\nDBGSQL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \"manager\"\nDBGSQL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 USING\nDBGSQL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 'RCAT11G'\nDBGSQL:\nDBGSQL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 sqlcode = 933\nDBGSQL:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 error: ORA-00933: SQL command not properly ended (krmkosqlerr)<\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s run the command into a sqlplus session to understand the failure.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: sql; gutter: true; first-line: 1\">SQL&gt; conn rcat\/manager\nConnected.\nSQL&gt; CREATE DATABASE LINK RCAT11G.IT.DBI-SERVICES.COM\nCONNECT TO \"RCAT\" IDENTIFIED BY \"manager\"\nUSING 'RCAT11G';\u00a0 2\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 3\nCREATE DATABASE LINK RCAT11G.IT.DBI-SERVICES.COM\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\nERROR at line 1:\nORA-00933: SQL command not properly ended<\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We can quickly understand that the &#8216;-&#8216; character is not appropriately used for domain name.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s temporarily update needed parameters. An instance restart will be needed.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: sql; gutter: true; first-line: 1\">SQL&gt; alter system set db_domain='dbiservices' scope=spfile;\n\nSystem altered.\n\nSQL&gt; alter system set service_names='dbiservices' scope=both;\n\nSystem altered.\n\nSQL&gt; alter database rename GLOBAL_NAME to \"RCAT11G.dbiservices\";\n\nDatabase altered.<\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And our next import will be successful.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: sql; gutter: true; first-line: 1\">RMAN&gt; import catalog rcat\/manager@RCAT11G;\n\nStarting import catalog at 05-JAN-2018 15:21:48\nconnected to source recovery catalog database\nimport validation complete\ndatabase unregistered from the source recovery catalog\nFinished import catalog at 05-JAN-2018 15:21:52\n\nRMAN&gt;<\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We will be able to restore DB_DOMAIN, SERVICE_NAMES and GLOBAL_NAME to previous values, followed by a catalog instance restart.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In this post I would like to share how I have been able to troubleshoot and solve a catalog import issue using RMAN debug function.
