SQL Server: Attunity connectors for data transfer to Oracle

Recently, at a customer site, I discovered the Attunity connector 1.1 for Oracle. The customer uses this connector to transfer data from Oracle to SQL Server using Integration Services (SSIS) and informed me that performances are greatly improved. So I decided to post a blog about this connector and perform a benchmark between Attunity connector and Microsoft OLE DB provider for Oracle.

Upgrading your Oracle Internet Application Server license

With the appearance of WebLogic Server as Oracle application server and the emergence of the Oracle Fusion Middleware suite, some may wonder what will be the support of their Oracle Internet Application server license, e. g. Oracle Forms and Reports services, Business Intelligence Edition, etc. As a consultant, I am often dealing with these kinds of problems and aiming to improve license benefits. In this post, I want to focus on Oracle Internet Application server licenses.

Using IOzone for Linux disk performance analysis

Who never had to measure the disk performances on a system?

Speaking about Linux performance monitoring includes a significant part of disk performances. If you are facing applications or databases running slower than expected or than on other environments, you may take a look on the I/O performances.
This posting aims to provide an introduction to a pretty interesting tool: IOzone.

HA with Oracle Fusion Middleware Forms & Reports 11g R2

SQL Server 2012: How to create a Server Role?

Recently, during one of my missions, a client asked me to give him access rights to the SQL Server logs from SSMS to his application managers. As you know, you must grant the role “securityadmin” to have such rights. However, with this role you can also manage logins, CREATE DATABASEs and change passwords.

These are “too many rights” for an IT manager, but there seems to be no other wayCry ... or is there?

Configuration of tmpfs on SLES 11 for Oracle 11.2 and AMM

Even if we (dbi services) usually advise to setup Oracle Enterprise Linux for Oracle deployments on Linux, it might appear that some customers still prefer other certified distributions such as SuSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES). This post describes the configuration of the tmpfs filesystem size on SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 11.0 (SLES 11, without any service pack) in order to use the Oracle 11.2 Automatic Memory Management feature (AMM) through the Oracle instance parameter memory_target.

Why Perl is my choice for scripting

I have been advising to use Perl for a long time in order to automate Oracle processes and operations. This week however, I tried for once to write a small procedure on a simple Linux shell (ksh and bash). This posting focuses on the shell internals and "nightmares" more than on Oracle related issues.
