Executive Breakfast with dbi services & EDB

07.02.2018 in Basel – 08.02.2018 in Lausanne – 07.03.2018 in Zurich

As the pace of digital transformation quickens, businesses are increasingly engaged in a race against time. As with any other seismic change in the marketplace, this one will create winners and losers. So the enterprise imperative is clear: harness new data and new tools to grow revenue and increase market share – before a competitor or new entrant gets there first. As a result, IT leaders find themselves backed into a corner. How do you balance the undeniable need for speedy development with longstanding concerns like data integrity, security, stability and scalability? And how do you solve today’s technology challenges without making compromises that will come back to haunt you? Open-source platforms offer a way forward. What potential do they have to solve both the short- and long-term issues? A new approach to open-source architecture – paired with a new philosophy – may help ease the dilemma. Postgres is the leading open source database management system that is being developed by a very active community for more than 15 years.

By using our last success stories, Daniel Westermann (dbi services), Arnaud Berbier (dbi services) and Jan Karremans (EDB), will be explaining why companies take open source as the centerpiece to modernize their IT infrastructure, thus increasing their scalability and taking full advantage of what today’s technologies can offer.

Open Infrastructure Day

13.09.17 in Basel

Are you ready to open your infrastructure? Open Source technologies get adapted rapidly nowadays, not only on the operating system level, but also at the deployment, monitoring, validation, virtualization and data management levels. Enterprises refuse more and more to be dependent on proprietary products and this is not only a matter of costs. Adaptations need to be implemented rapidly in today’s infrastructures. “Change” is the only constant and changes are coming faster and faster. We believe that you can only ride that horse and be prepared for the future by adapting open standards and open products.

This event will present you some selected open source products and best practices you will be able to discover through two simultaneous streams.

Stream 2

dbi DBaaS with Openstack

Flexibility becomes a daily challenge! Application owners, developers or project members need more and more regularly and on-demand databases provisioning. Cloud architectures are a great solution in such cases. Using OpenStack to build up a cloud is a fantastic alternative to build on. Unfortunately it does not come with an “out-of-the-box” DBaaS solution. Building a DBaaS for OpenStack is just a matter of combining the right tools for the given requirements. In this session, we will present the tools we use to build up the dbi DBaaS, our service to easily provision instances and databases.

Scaling MariaDB with Galera Cluster and Docker

What if you could vertically scale a MariaDB Galera cluster staring up some more Docker containers with just single click? Either your workload increases or you hired additional developers which require more resources on the development cluster? By combining MariaDB, Galera Cluster and Docker in an easy to manage way you can adapt to changing workloads easily. Come in and attend the demo.

The elephant in the enterprise - Best practices

PostgreSQL gains more and more attraction in the database market. Companies with workloads of all sizes (small, medium, large and very large) either consider moving to PostgreSQL or did it already. Being a pure community project PostgreSQL attracts many companies because they can deploy it where ever they want without worrying about license costs. In this session we’ll look at the features that make PostgreSQL the ideal choice for enterprises of any size, no matter if it is about data in the gigabyte or terrabyte range. Applying the right best practices right from the beginning will give you freedom tomorrow.

Monitor and analyze your infrastructure with the Elastic stack

Analyzing log files of a single server or database does not give you the overall picture of what is going on in your infrastructure. But how can you tell then where the issue really is or even better how can you avoid issues before they happen? Using the Elastic Stack you can aggregate all your log files into one common location and then build dashboards which graphically present potential bottle necks, issues and trends. By defining alerts which fire on anomalies or specific log events you can save yourself a lot of work in troubeshooting. Sounds interesting?

Automate, control and validate your infrastructure with Ansible

Do you know how many servers (physical, virtual or even in the cloud) your infrastructure consists of? How do you control them and how do you make sure that all servers and the software running on top of them are in exactly the state they should be? Are you aware if someone changed something on one of the servers? Say welcome to Ansible. Ansible is a agent less “automation for everyone” solution based on ssh and Python which gives you back control over your infrastructure. No matter if you want to deploy applications on several servers in exactly the same way or if you want to validate your infrastructure against your requirements. Ansible is there to assist you and by joining this session you’ll learn about Ansible’s architecture, use cases and best practices.

An introduction to Big Data

Everybody is talking about Big Data these days and you wonder what this really is all about? What are the use cases for Big Data and what tools are around which can work with massive amounts of data? This session will introduce you into the world of the bits and bytes that want to get analyzed and correlated. After joining this session you should have a much clearer picture on what Big Data is and where it makes sense to use it.

Event Big Data: Getting the maximum value out of your data

13.09.17 in Basel (in English)

The world of data is evolving faster and faster. New concepts and technologies are emerging every day. Big Data is now getting a major role in the way the data is designed. In the first session, we are going to describe Big Data and how to implement Big Data use cases. In a second session, our experts will demonstrate with an insurance business case how the usage of open data combined with Big Data technologies can help to analyze driver profiles in terms of risks. Finally, Oracle as a Partner of dbi services will introduce the new Oracle Big Data Appliance as a possible all-in-one solution.

SESSIONS AND PRESENTATIONS (all in English)

Introduction to Big Data

Presented by

  • Mehdi Bada, Consultant at dbi services

This introduction to Big Data concepts and technologies will help you to understand what is meant with “Big Data” and how use cases can be implemented. Our experts will show you how Big Data evolved during the last years by comparing the “old and new model” of data management. This first session will provide you an insight about what it needs to set up a Big Data architecture that works properly (i.e. with Cloudera, Oracle and Microsoft)

Big Data in insurances

Presented by

  • Mehdi Bada, Consultant at dbi services

With the idea of how to generate new business models, our experts will demonstrate how Big Data can support insurances by assessing the risks related to drivers’ behavior: a particularly sensitive topic for the insurance industry and its customers. Based on the Cloudera distribution, our experts will present you a specific Big Data architecture that helps to collect structured and non-structured data including internal and external data as open data.

Oracle Big Data Appliance

Presented by

  • Alexandru Dimofte (Oracle Big Data Sales Consultant – Big Data and Analytics)

As Big Data is maturing into a key component of the enterprise data management system, the focus shifts from demos and proof of concepts to full scale production deployments that are performant, secure, easy to integrate but also to manage. In this session, we will discuss about the advantages of Engineered vs DIY for Big Data Systems and what this means in terms of Time-to-Value, Risk, Operating Costs and Manageability.

Event Oracle 12cR2

By | Events | No Comments

Event Oracle 12cR2

19.05.17 in Zurich

Additional event

Long awaited on-premises, the Release 2 of Oracle Database 12c is available on the Cloud, on Exadata and soon on further platforms whereas it is not always easy to know what information really matters beyond the marketing messages.
In order to help you to plan future upgrades properly, our Oracle experts organize a breakfast dedicated to the Oracle Database 12cR2. This event is a great opportunity for DBAs and Developers to discover new features that are interesting from a technical perspective. The multitenant architecture will also be a specific topic in our discussions: the non-CDB , the one that we use for decades, is now deprecated and, by the way, may no longer be supported in the future.
If you are interested to understand how and when to move on safely to the 12cR2, then you are kindly invited to join our experts for a friendly breakfast with technical presentations and open discussions. The experts of dbi services are looking forward to sharing their knowledge with you and answering your questions.

SESSIONS AND PRESENTATIONS

Introduction to the 12cR2

Still awaited on-premises, the Oracle 12.2 is available partially or totally on different platforms, in particular on the new Oracle Database Exadata Express Service and on the Oracle public cloud.

Top 12.2 features for daily use

Besides the big new features targeting at a few big customers, each release comes with small improvements which daily help DBAs or developers:
new online operations, more automation, more efficient SQL functions, better SQL plan stability, etc.

With or without option, all you need to know about the multitenant architecture

Because non-CDB is deprecated, we need to start to look at multitenant. 12.2 brings new features which can be used on any edition even without options.

Multitenant New Security Features Clarify DevOps/DBA roles

The CDB/PDB paradigm enforces role segregation between the container DBA and the application DBA. In DevOps environment, you need the finer access privilege definition that comes in 12.1 (common/local users) and in 12.2 (lockdown profiles, PDB isolation). Can we administrate a Cloud or on-premises database and give PDB administration rights to application teams for their application? And clearly define roles between system DBA and application DBA? The new features and best practices.

Was kosten z.

Databases Clone Using ACFS

Oracle on Atomic Linux

Oracle Grid Infrastructure - SCHULUNGSTAG -

Zielgruppe: Datenbank-Administratoren, System-Administratoren, Storage Administratoren
Level: mittel
Vorkenntnisse erforderlich: Vorkenntnisse in Linux erforderlich

Event “Logical Replication Insight”

Lausanne – 31.05.2016 / Olten – 01.06.2016

Ensuring data integration and system migration with minimal downtimes has become a crucial factor for the companies’ performance.
To meet this challenge, dbi services’ specialists are proposing this technical event dedicated to logical replication of data bases, giving you the opportunity to access expert’s knowledge regarding 3 replication solutions: Oracle GoldenGate, Dbvisit Replicate and Attunity Replicate. Starting from an Oracle database, we will present different types of implementation of logical replication and show factually the strengths of each solution from our partners Oracle, Dbvisit and Microsoft. Last but not least, we will enjoy a friendly apéro together after having shared experiences during a final open discussion. The experts of dbi services are looking forward to sharing their knowledge with you during this event. Come and join us!

The sessions

1st session: Logical Replication in the Disaster Recovery environment with Oracle GoldenGate
Hervé Schweitzer, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Principal Consultant

GoldenGate is an Oracle product which allows the replication of database applications (logical replication). However, the related databases must be consistent, at anytime. Otherwise the replication stops. Nowadays more and more companies have disaster recovery data centers and thus want to protect everything, including databases. Oracle Data Guard is usually used for the replication of Oracle environments in a Data Center (physical replication). But what happens when the replicated databases (standby) intentionally or unintentionally gets active? And is it possible to automate the GoldenGate replication in the DR Data Center too? This presentation provides an insight into these questions and proposes possible solutions.

2nd session: Dbvisit Replicate – logical replication made easy
Franck Pachot, Technology Leader and Senior Consultant   (presentation in French)

Clemens Bleile, Senior Consultant   (presentations in German)

Logical replication brings multiple concerns in a feasibility study: are datatypes compatible? Are there some conflict rules to set-up? What rate of redo can be processed? The best way to answer is to try. Dbvisit comes with a setup wizard which makes it possible to configure and run a replication on 30 minutes, what  is perfect for a PoC. Let’s do it live, from setup to running, and test common cases of conflict resolution, table re-synchronization, etc.

3rd session: Attunity Replicate – High-Performance Replication of Oracle Data to SQL Server

David Barbarin, Senior Consultant  & Vincent Matthey, Consultant   (presentation in French)
Stéphane Haby, Delivery Manager and Senior Consultant
   (presentation in German)

The replication between two different databases can be very complex. Attunity replicate is a powerfully simple data replication software. This tool is easy to configure and replace the need for complex and costly custom development projects. Through different scenarios, we will test all possibilities of the replication between Oracle and SQL Server such as different datatypes, DDL and DML commands.

Event “Journées SQL Server 2015″

Our SQL Server team attended this year again the event SQL Server Days for its 5th edition, the JSS 2015, which took place on 30th November and 1st December 2015 at the Microsoft Conference Centre in Issy-les-Moulineaux, near Paris.

This free event is the largest conference for professional users of Microsoft’s data platform in France. Over two days, 50 speakers led 40 different sessions to large audiences. Our SQL Server experts; Stéphane Haby, Nathan Courtine and David Barbarin, ran two of the sessions: “What’s new in SQL 2016: Security, Temporal & Stretch Tables” and “In-Memory 2016: Operational Analytics”, both of which were highly successful.

dbi services’ presence at JSS 2015 also featured a stand, where our three consultants made sure visitors were kept happy by handing out technical information and chocolate Santas, for a pre-Christmas treat.

DOAG Conference & Exhibition 2015

DOAG Conference & Exhibition 2015

dbi services attended one of the major international Oracle trade fairs, DOAG in Nuremberg (Germany). With its ever-popular stand, the dbi services team gave technical presentations and training courses from 16th to 20th November 2015. Nearly 2,100 people took part in the event, with 450 technical presentations and 11 one-day training courses held.

dbi services took the opportunity of this unmissable show for German Oracle product users and enthusiasts to meet them both at its stand and at the eight conferences held by its experts:

  • Oracle12c result cache: the good, the bad and the ugly cases
  • Oracle GoldenGate configuration protected in the DR environment
  • Automated RAC Setup with Cobbler and Virtual Box
  • Oracle over Docker
  • Application Continuity
  • All about locks: DML, DDL, foreign key, online operations
  • Data Recovery Advisor in Details
  • Oracle WebLogic Monitoring with SNMP/WLDF

Many people attended the sessions, seeking further information from our advisors on the dbi services stand. Our stand aroused a lot of interest – not least through the prize draw, with five winners of “swiss-made” prizes, and handing out 250 chocolate Santas. DOAG 2015 ended with its traditional day of training courses – Schulungstag – including the course “Oracle Database Performance Tuning – how does it work?” given by our two experts, Hervé Schweitzer and Nicolas Jardot, which was a big hit. Look forward to seeing you at our stand in 2016!
