Open Source technologies get adapted rapidly nowadays, not only on the operating system level, but also at the deployment, monitoring, validation, virtualization and data management levels. Enterprises refuse more and more to be dependent on proprietary products and this is not only a matter of costs. dbi DBaaS with Openstack

Flexibility becomes a daily challenge! Application owners, developers or project members need more and more regularly and on-demand databases provisioning. Cloud architectures are a great solution in such cases. Using OpenStack to build up a cloud is a fantastic alternative to build on. Unfortunately it does not come with an “out-of-the-box” DBaaS solution. Building a DBaaS for OpenStack is just a matter of combining the right tools for the given requirements. Monitor and analyze your infrastructure with the Elastic stack

Analyzing log files of a single server or database does not give you the overall picture of what is going on in your infrastructure. But how can you tell then where the issue really is or even better how can you avoid issues before they happen? Using the Elastic Stack you can aggregate all your log files into one common location and then build dashboards which graphically present potential bottle necks, issues and trends. By defining alerts which fire on anomalies or specific log events you can save yourself a lot of work in troubeshooting. Sounds interesting?

Ansible is a agent less “automation for everyone” solution based on ssh and Python which gives you back control over your infrastructure. No matter if you want to deploy applications on several servers in exactly the same way or if you want to validate your infrastructure against your requirements. Ansible is there to assist you and by joining this session you’ll learn about Ansible’s architecture, use cases and best practices.

An introduction to Big Data

Everybody is talking about Big Data these days and you wonder what this really is all about? What are the use cases for Big Data and what tools are around which can work with massive amounts of data? This session will introduce you into the world of the bits and bytes that want to get analyzed and correlated. After joining this session you should have a much clearer picture on what Big Data is and where it makes sense to use it.

Tasks and responsibilities

As part of our service desk team (located in Delémont) you will be in charge of the most sensitive and critical database environments such as Nuclear Power Plans, Hospitals or Pharmaceutical industries.

Your mission in our service desk team is to work on all dbi services accounts, by providing excellent services and supporting our customers. Typical responsibilities will include:

  • Customer contact
  • Oracle Incident Management (Real Application Cluster, Tuning, Oracle Database Appliance)
  • Other SGBD-R Incident Management such as PostgreSQL and MySQL under Linux and Windows environments with Virtualization technologies
  • Ticket management
  • CMDB maintenance and administration

Your profile

Besides your active listening skills, you are curious, well-organized and sharing knowledge goes with your nature. Being stress-resistant is another ability that is required in this job. You are passionate about database technologies and aim to develop your technical skills by passing certifications (Oracle, ITIL, aso..). You are an excellent communicator and are fluent in German (ideally mother tongue) as well as in English (spoken and written).

Work experience and education

  • You own a superior school diploma in IT sciences
  • You already had the responsibility to manage and administrate several production databases
  • You own Oracle certifications such as OCA or OCP
  • Beeing ITIL certified is a plus
  • Working experience in an IT Service Desk support is a plus

Great Place to Work

dbi services ranks in 7th place among Swiss companies “where it’s great to work” in the category “20-49 employees”

Among the companies which took part in the Great Place to Work survey, dbi services gets a score of 91%, higher than the Swiss average of 88% for small companies and the Swiss average for all companies regardless of size, which is 86%.

Delémont, 10.05.2017 – Software company dbi services has been named 7th best company “where it’s great to work” in Switzerland in the category with 20-49 employees. Among the companies which took part in the Great Place to Work survey, dbi services gets a score of 91%, higher than the Swiss average for small companies (88%) and the Swiss average for all companies regardless of size (86%). The prizes were awarded at the end of a poll of 15,000 employees in Swiss companies which took part in the survey.

Last year, HR managers at dbi services decided to take part in the Great Place to Work programme. They explain that behind the challenge there is, above all, a desire to improve – they are aware that there are still some areas the company could do better in.

“Every year, dbi services asks its employees to take certification tests in order to maintain and improve their levels of knowledge. We can only justify having these expectations of our employees if dbi services itself is able to respond to similar expectations. Through the opinions of our employees, Great Place to Work provides confirmation of the excellence of the company they work in, which is seeking constantly to improve”, says Grégory Steulet, Chief Financial Officer of dbi services.

Ever since dbi services was set up, its managers have given special consideration to the atmosphere among its employees.

Each year dbi services organises a number of events, among them the Summer and Winter Events, which employees and their families are invited to attend. In addition to these, dbi services xChange in-house events take place twice a year. Their purpose is to enable experts in dbi services to share their work and knowledge with colleagues and spend enjoyable time with them.

 

Preparing for the future

With a view to meeting employee expectations better still, and continuing to be a company “where it’s great to work”, dbi services set up some working groups once survey results were known. The focus will be on internal communication through the implementation of specific tools, being socially and environmentally responsible and, ultimately, thinking about employees who work from home. This will be a real challenge for the company, given that keeping the team spirit alive must remain one of its driving forces.

At the end of 2017, dbi services wishes to take part in Great Place to Work again. The company delights in the fact that this time round, due to its constant growth, it will be competing in the category with 50 – 249 employees.

dbi services announces a record year in 2016, the company restructures with David Hueber as new CEO, and Yann Neuhaus as Chairman of the Board and head of the sales team.

2016 was a record year for dbi services, with an increase in turnover of more than 33%. The start-up company confirms its strong foothold among major IT stakeholders in Switzerland. It is adjusting its structure to prepare for the future and set its sights beyond national borders even more strongly.

Delémont, 28/04/2017. In a rapidly-changing market, you have to ask yourself the right questions and build a long-term strategy to anticipate future challenges. dbi offers services based on innovative solutions thanks to the cutting-edge skills of its expert team. These kinds of skills are acquired, built up and kept in place through experience, but equally through company commitment. One of the challenges for dbi services is to recognise trends in technology early enough to allow its experts to keep pace constantly with market expectations. Increasing its visibility is another challenge that dbi services likewise wishes to take on, through more personalised representation and more finely tuned sales activity. Company strategy and sales must be considered as two tasks and functions – Chairman of the Board and Chief Sales Officer – that current dbi services CEO Yann Neuhaus has decided to see through.

“The management of dbi services has thought long and hard about this decision. To tell the truth, we have been preparing for 2 years now. We have just been waiting for dbi services to reach sufficient maturity. Now, this restructuring makes perfect sense. I’m really enthusiastic about taking on the new responsibilities I have been entrusted with, because the future of dbi services is something I really care about”, says Yann Neuhaus.

Current Chief Operations Officer (COO) David Hueber will take over as Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Energetic, skilled and good at listening to colleagues, he will be able to hold course just as well as his predecessor.

“His technical expertise, his interpersonal skills, his great ability to explain things simply, and his natural leadership will make him a superb CEO”, says Yann Neuhaus.

As far as figures go, 2016 was a highly successful year for dbi services. Its gross turnover came in at 8.44 million Swiss francs, an increase of 33% on 2015 figures. This growth is principally due to development of facilities management contract sales (+35%) and consultancy services (+29%).

Staff numbers are following suit, with 51 members in the dbi services team at the close of 2016 and plans for further expansion in the first quarter of 2017. This general expansion is partly explained by strong development of the Zurich branch, which has been able to carve itself a place in a very competitive market. And in addition, new partnerships with OpenText eDOCS, Cloudera and Attunity have boosted the services offered by the software company.

Monitoring von WebLogic 12C Domain mit RESTfull Interface

Eine der neuen Leistungsmerkmale in WebLogic 12C ist das RESTfull Interface, das es ermöglicht, die WebLogic ManagedBeans direkt über HTTP/S Requests abzufragen. WebLogic RESTfull Management Services gewährleisten ein umfassendes Interface für die Konfiguration, das Monitoring, die Implementierung von Applikationen und die Verwaltung des WebLogic Servers in allen unterstützten Umgebungen. Z.B kann der Server Status leicht über eine einfache URL überprüft werden und mit einem Monitoring Programm wie Nagios entsprechend verbunden werden. Zusätzliche Ressourcen (WLST Script oder JMX Java-Anwendungen) sind nicht erforderlich. RESTfull Modules sind auf dem WebLogic Domain Administration Server installiert.

In-Memory-Pläne für den 12.2-Optimizer: Teuer oder billig?

Mit In-Memory bekommt der Oracle Optimizer neue Plan-Alternativen. Wie werden diese im Vergleich zu “normalen” Plänen gewichtet? Was kosten z. B. fünf In-Memory-Zugriffe im Vergleich zu fünf logischen IOs im Buffer Cache? Tendiert der Optimizer eher zu In-Memory-Plänen oder haben traditionelle Full-Table-Scans noch eine Chance? Dieser Vortrag beschäftigt sich auch mit den Optimizer-Erweiterungen für In-Memory in 12.2.

Databases Clone Using ACFS

Test- oder Entwicklungs-Datenbanken neu zu erstellen, ist für DBAs fast schon zur täglichen Aufgabe geworden. Leider erfüllt die traditionelle DUPLICATE-Methode nicht mehr die heutigen Anforderungen, mit denen wir durch Datenmenge, Dauer und Flexibilität konfrontiert sind. File Systeme wie ACFS haben „Commit-On-Write“ Technologien für die Snapshot-Erstellung eingeführt, die das Paradigma der Datenbank-Bereitstellung und des DB-Klonens ändern. In diesem Vortrag wird präsentiert, wie die ACFS-Snapshot-Technologie es ermöglicht, einfach und schnell neue Kopien von Produktionsdatenbanken zu erzeugen.

Im Zuge neuer Container-Implementierungen, traten neue Anforderungen, wie Clustering, auf. Um diesen Herausforderungen gerecht zu werden, wurden spezielle Distributionen angeboten. Atomic Linux ist eine schlanke Linux Distribution dediziert für Container, die auch Clustering-Funktionalitäten bietet. In diesem Vortrag wird präsentiert, wie man eine Cluster-DbaaS-Umgebung für Oracle Datenbanken mit Atomic Linux aufbauen könnte.

Oracle Grid Infrastructure - SCHULUNGSTAG -

Mit der Grid Infrastructure bietet Oracle eine Cluster-Lösung mit der sich ziemlich alle Produkte hochverfügbar betreiben lassen. Gleichzeitig sind Cluster-Lösungen, egal von welchem Hersteller, jedoch Produkte, die nur dann verlässlich arbeiten wenn die darunter liegen Schichten richtig vorbereitet, konfiguriert und überwacht sind. On 5th November 2015, dbi services invited clients and partners to the opening of its new head office on rue de la Jeunesse 2, in the Polyadès Building, in Delémont, Switzerland. The event was introduced by Yann Neuhaus (CEO), who began by thanking clients and partners for their confidence, before talking about the history of the company.

Event “Journées SQL Server 2015″

Our SQL Server team attended this year again the event SQL Server Days for its 5th edition, the JSS 2015, which took place on 30th November and 1st December 2015 at the Microsoft Conference Centre in Issy-les-Moulineaux, near Paris.

This free event is the largest conference for professional users of Microsoft’s data platform in France. Over two days, 50 speakers led 40 different sessions to large audiences. Our SQL Server experts; Stéphane Haby, Nathan Courtine and David Barbarin, ran two of the sessions: “What’s new in SQL 2016: Security, Temporal & Stretch Tables” and “In-Memory 2016: Operational Analytics”, both of which were highly successful.

dbi services’ presence at JSS 2015 also featured a stand, where our three consultants made sure visitors were kept happy by handing out technical information and chocolate Santas, for a pre-Christmas treat.

DOAG Conference & Exhibition 2015

dbi services attended one of the major international Oracle trade fairs, DOAG in Nuremberg (Germany). With its ever-popular stand, the dbi services team gave technical presentations and training courses from 16th to 20th November 2015. Nearly 2,100 people took part in the event, with 450 technical presentations and 11 one-day training courses held.

dbi services took the opportunity of this unmissable show for German Oracle product users and enthusiasts to meet them both at its stand and at the eight conferences held by its experts:

  • Oracle12c result cache: the good, the bad and the ugly cases
  • Oracle GoldenGate configuration protected in the DR environment
  • Automated RAC Setup with Cobbler and Virtual Box
  • Oracle over Docker
  • Application Continuity

Many people attended the sessions, seeking further information from our advisors on the dbi services stand. Our stand aroused a lot of interest – not least through the prize draw, with five winners of “swiss-made” prizes, and handing out 250 chocolate Santas. DOAG 2015 ended with its traditional day of training courses – Schulungstag – including the course “Oracle Database Performance Tuning – how does it work?” given by our two experts, Hervé Schweitzer and Nicolas Jardot, which was a big hit.
